OK. Would like to leave a completly transparent review. We are a group of 6 travleing... 3 of portuguese decent. We ended up here because not much else was open. We were greeted pleasently and overall had great experience with service. The waiter was pleasant, helpful and joked. Appetizers overall were good exept the completly under cooked shrimp. Yes. Poorly cooked shirmp...in Porto. We each ordered entrees. Terrible. EVERY Single one. How you can mess up cod fish in Portugal, is beyond me. Next, one of the cheapest wines on the menu... 10 Euros. Paid 6 at a fancier spot yesterday. Bathroom, not to be desired. The bill came to 118 Euros. We have yet to lay out that type of money for any bill. We are spenders. Money is not the issue nor a concern. This is truly a tourist trap. Stay away. There are 1000 places superior. Also, they keep your change without asking. Be aware. But just don't go here....
Read moreI only gave it a 1 star rating cause I am unable to give this place a negative rating. We were a party of 6 and none of us left satisfied. The only thing good about our vist to the Cafe Java was the wine which was produced by a quality winery. Unlike this undesirable location called the Cafe Java. Chicken was over cooked, rubbery, tasteless, and unbeatable. The cod was not given the proper cooking justice neccessary. Its is supposed to be a light, flaky, flavorfull, and authentic tasty of Portugal and instead it was a heavy, overly greasy, and bland representation of a Portugeuese staple. And the restrooms were not sanitary. That would require a detailed review of its...
Read moreI know I'm in Portugal, and that the language here is Portuguese. But the fact that I spoke English where others spoke Portuguese or French made me quite obviously not the most wanted customer.
I ordered the infamous Francesinha, the famous sandwich of Porto, and I have the feeling the staff had a bit of a good laugh at me when the spicy sausage in there showed its face by catching me off-guard. My bad, I should have put the menu through Google Translate first. However, the gravy was rather sour and showed a skin on top while being served, ruining the bread if it soaked up too much of it. The steak in the sandwich was cold and dry, making it touch to cut through. Their other dishes might be good, but I wasn't able to finish mine because of the aftertaste in my mouth. And I remain on the look out for a decent cup of...
