Don't let its rather average external facade fool you; the interior of this church is stunning and, along with its rich history and knowledgeable staff, make it a great place to visit. Igreja de Santa Clara is a hidden gem nestled within a courtyard that you can easily miss from the main road. Originally built in 1457 as part of a monastery complex, it was intended to accommodate the nuns of the Order of Saint Clare who had outgrown their previous lodgings. The church boasts an incredibly opulent interior with intricately carved and gilded woodwork covering every possible space (it can be quite overwhelming). It's widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Portuguese Baroque and Rococo architecture, and is definitely worth a visit for those interested in history and architecture. Entry is EUR 4 per person and no pre-booking is needed. It's not big so 30 minutes here is more than enough time to explore it in full.

On my way to Porto Cathedral, I stopped by this little church because it was on the attractions list of Porto Card which I had. From the exterior, it was underwhelmed. But when I went in, I was mesmerized by its peculiarly ornate interior. The whole interior was wood carved and gold leaf gilded. The craftsmanship was so delicate and elegant. The background music made this place even more serene and divine. There was a historian on site to tell about the history about this church. His name is Mio, forgive me if I misspelled his name. He was so friendly and knowledgeable. I was lucky I was the only one in the church at that moment and Mio explained some details of the design and decorations which made the visit more enjoyable. I highly recommend to pay a visit to this beautiful church. With Porto Card, you can save €1.

This baroque church has undergone restoration work. Inside are what are said to be some of the best examples of gilded woodcarving in Portugal. The outside does not indicate what a jewel this is with the gold leaf and wood carving inside. You have to pay an entrance fee to visit. It seems there are historians on site to explain about the renovated building. It was part of a former convent. We did not have time to stop and the entrance fee did feed into our decision not to visit. Nevertheless if you are interested in this and haven't been to any/many of the churches in Porto this is one that is slightly off the tourist trail. I went on a weekday in December (low tourism period) and there was no lineup to enter and buy tickets and there was only a few visitors at the same time as me. The ticket cost $4 for an adult.

What is nice is that you get to do the tour at your pace so you can stay as long as you want. There is basically 2 bigger rooms to see and 2 smaller rooms that sort of serve as entry to those bigger rooms and which also have a few interesting details about them and these rooms are on two floors. The stairs connecting them is a bit narrow but not long.

The whole space is relatively small so this is a place that you can "quickly" visit but it might be a better experience to take your time so you can better appreciate the incredible amount of details that this place contains.

The biggest and most popular room will be the big main room with the gold leaves and with the pews, where mass is still celebrated on certain days. It is very impressive and even though you walk by yourself there is an employee in each of the big room and they'll answer questions about the place if you have any. The only thing I didn't appreciate was the noticeable pride some of the employees had when talking about how the country colonized other countries and, among other things, used their materials to build the church when they were explaining some of the details of the church to visitors; let's be...

Porto's Igreja de Santa Clara is a fine example of my favourite kind of historic Catholic church; these are the one that are fairly austere and humble on the outside, but when you pass through the doorway you are almost overwhelmed by the opulent decor. The exterior of the church is largely 15th century in origin and built in the Gothic style. The exception is the main entrance which was remodeled in the Baroque style. Sitting in a courtyard, just off a leafy square, the church has a very peaceful feel to it. You wouldn't know you were only minutes from Porto's famed Ribeira and the city centre. Inside the Igreja de Santa Clara is something of a contrast; during the 17th century the interior was transformed into a masterpiece of gilded woodwork. There is barely an inch of this church that is not adorned with angels, saints, cherubs or some decorative feature. Some may think this is all a little over the top, but I would rate it as some of the finest baroque meets rococo craftsmanship to be found...
