São Bento Railway Station – A Must-Visit Landmark in Porto, Portugal

São Bento Railway Station (Estação de São Bento), located in the heart of Porto, Portugal, is more than just a transportation hub—it is a historical and artistic masterpiece that captivates visitors with its stunning interior. Opened in 1916, the station was built on the site of a former Benedictine monastery and has since become one of the most iconic landmarks in Portugal.

The station’s main highlight is its azulejo tilework, covering approximately 20,000 tiles, crafted by Jorge Colaço. These hand-painted blue and white ceramic tiles depict significant moments in Portuguese history, including battles, royal weddings, and everyday rural life. The contrast between the Beaux-Arts architectural style and the detailed tile panels creates an awe-inspiring visual experience, making it a must-see attraction in Porto.

Things to See Around São Bento

Beyond its breathtaking interior, São Bento Railway Station is perfectly located near some of Porto’s top attractions:

Clérigos Tower (Torre dos Clérigos) – One of Porto’s tallest landmarks, offering panoramic views of the city.

Livraria Lello – A world-famous bookstore with intricate woodwork and stained glass, rumored to have inspired J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

Ribeira District – A lively, picturesque riverside area filled with colorful buildings, restaurants, and stunning views of the Douro River.

Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto) – A Romanesque-Gothic cathedral with historical significance and breathtaking views.

Palácio da Bolsa – A magnificent 19th-century palace with opulent interiors and grand architecture.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are catching a train or simply admiring its magnificent tile-covered walls, São Bento is an unmissable destination in Porto. It beautifully combines history, art, and architecture, providing a glimpse into Portugal’s rich cultural heritage. A visit to this station is like stepping into a living museum, making it a fantastic starting point for exploring Porto’s historic...

🚉 Stepping Into the Past ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

We visited São Bento Station in June 2025, during a quiet late afternoon — no crowds, no rush, just the hum of the city in the background.

As we took the escalator up from the lower level, I remember glancing around and feeling something shift. The stone walls, the iron fixtures, the soft echoes… It almost felt like we were rising not just to the street, but out of a different century. That moment — simple but surreal — stayed with me more than I expected.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to explore the full station, and I missed the chance to stand in front of its famous azulejos — over 20,000 hand-painted ceramic tiles depicting Portugal’s rich history. It's what makes this place world-famous, and it’s my biggest regret from the visit.

Still, the architecture and atmosphere alone made the stop worthwhile. Even without seeing the full murals, the station has a certain solemn beauty — like a portal disguised as public transport.

Quick Ratings: Historical Significance: 9/10 Architecture & Atmosphere: 9.5/10 Accessibility: 8.5/10 📸 Photo/Video Potential: 8/10 Overall Experience: 8.5/10

📝 I’ll definitely return to properly see the murals next time. If you’re visiting Porto, don’t just pass through São Bento — take a moment to stand still inside.

And if this review gave you even one helpful thought, I’d appreciate a quick 👍 —

São Bento Train Station in Porto is a stunning architectural masterpiece that combines historic charm with modern functionality. As soon as you step inside, you are transported to a bygone era of travel and romance.

The station's exterior is a beautiful example of Beaux-Arts architecture, with its grand façade featuring intricate stonework and a clock tower. Inside, the main hall is simply breathtaking, with a vaulted ceiling adorned with over 20,000 tiles depicting scenes from Portuguese history.

The station serves as a hub for regional and intercity trains, including the popular Porto-Lisbon route, making it a convenient and central point for travelers exploring the region. The station also has excellent amenities for passengers, such as cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

What makes São Bento Train Station truly special is its attention to detail and commitment to preserving the region's history. The station's tilework alone is a sight to behold, and the station's staff takes great pride in maintaining and preserving this beautiful building for generations to come.

Overall, São Bento Train Station is a must-visit destination in Porto, whether you are a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply a traveler passing through. Its beauty, history, and functionality make it a true gem of the city's transportation...

Beautiful tiled railway station, currently under renovation but the entrance hall is still beautiful with all the tiles. Very noisy as full of tourists but don't miss it.
