We discovered the place almost like an accident. We decided to wait cause the food seemed to be really delicious and the place very typical. We waited almost 1:30 hours even because after they called us, the waiter that should prepare our table forgot completely our presence. Of course, if I had read the recommendations before I would know about the long times waiting. BUT, if I ever come back to Setúbal (isn't that I got crazy with the city) I will come back for sure. Why? Well, because if you know the waiting is the only sin, then you can go pre-disposed to "suffer" the moment watching juicy food passing in front of you, and in exchange you taste local and very good food and pay a cheap price. We ate a dorado with potatoes and salad, the quality of the food was as we expected: local, typical, fresh and very very tasty. The waiter was really nice with us even if he just speaks Portuguese we managed to understand each other mixing Spanish, English...
Read moreThe waiter barely spoke English, they brought out many more appetizers than what we ordered. One of the main courses was supposed to be fresh mixed grilled fish. As the fish was being grilled, a bald young waiter distributed it from a large tray as he pleased. The locals, and those who knew Portuguese, got 6-7 fish each, we only got two, the scraps, the head that was left. Everyone else got salad, we didn't. The squid wasn't cooked through, a disgusting white mass was oozing out of it. When I pointed this out, the waiter sarcastically remarked that it was perfect that way. The total was disproportionately high compared to the service. We didn't get the bill when we paid, so we can't complain. You can only pay in cash. They don't respect foreign guests, they rip them off, they treat locals and those who know Portuguese with special attention. It was a very...
Read moreFresh charcoal grilled fish!! I don’t think you’ll find a place more authentic and casual offerings wide variety of grilled fish than Bombordo. They clearly know what their doing because the place is usually packed. It’s worth going hungry and getting the fish rotation (rodizio) which means a waiter will come to your table with a different fish every 10-15 minutes. Our neighboring table got this and we were watching in awe. We chose the Fried Chocos starter (fried cuttlefish) and grilled sardines, grilled Espada (swordfish) and a meat/egg/fries combo for the kids. Everything was excellent and plenty. Don’t be put of when ordering. They will take really good care of you but may not be the best communicators. We sat outside and the setting is very basic and not pretty. But it’s worth going because of the food. And it was not...
