By the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, you'll find a bunch of small restaurants. But hey, not all are worth your time. DeCastro is a standout though. You won't even notice it if you're just strolling by, since it's tucked inside the Porto Cruz building. You gotta head up to the third floor using the elevator.
The service is quick, and the waitstaff are friendly and multilingual – they're cool in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. But the real star is the food. We kicked things off with peixinhos da horta (green bean tempura) served with lemon mayo – really hit the spot. Then came my order, the veal steak with cured ham, while my wife dug into the duck leg. Both were seriously good, but the veal steak really is life-changing.
Time for desserts. I went for the classic "toucinho do céu" (almond and egg cake) with raspberry ice cream, and my wife took a shot at the chocolate cake. Tough to pick a winner – both were superb.

Read moreWe were staying at the Gran Cruz Hotel in Porto, and they booked this for us. It's the sister to the Gran Cruz hotel, which is across the river. This Restaurant it on the third floor, of the building, which is next to the Sandeman Port House. We had a wine tasting on the ground floor, then went for dinner on the third floor, then finished the night on the outdoor 360 panoramic outdoor terrace on the fourth floor. The whole evening was fantastic. Foodwise: Just divine. For anyone with Coeliac, or just needs Gluten Free, this was no issue at all. I could have most of the menu. Roast Beef with Nuts, followed by Seafood Rice, that was my choice and I don't regret it one bit. I'd go back here in a flash. Lovely views from our table, gorgeous wine and port, and just a lovely...
Read moreWe were blown away by the setting of this restaurant it overlooks the river Douro and is immediately opposite the Praca Riberia with views of the historic centre of Porto. Initially we arrived early and were offered to spend some time on the rooftop bar which had 360 views. When booking via The Fork we asked if we could have a view overlooking the river and to my amazement we were given a seat at the restaurants panoramic room which had beautiful views of the river and the historic centre. We were blown away by the environment. The food itself was nice and the price was affordable which reflected the quality of the food against the setting. Having said that we thoroughly enjoyed and would...
