Initial thoughts that it looked good. Waiter was nice. We had cod dumplings and can sardines. Nice starter. But hold on it went downhill from there. We ordered steamed mussels which were not only cold but had the most awful bad smell. After sharing this with the waiter he totally agreed and could not stop apologising. He offered a freshly cooked batch and we accepted. They came and although they looked and smelt better my wife refused to eat them.

Finally the chef came out of the kitchen and rather than apologise she gave us the most dirtiest look as if to say how dear you criticise!!!. We left without further orders and paid for the starter only and drinks. Ate here on the festival of St John, 23rd June 2023. It was a set menu of 55 euros per person and was fabulous. We started with normal bread and olives, then a salad, followed by sardines, then a meat dish and finished with an apple tart and ice cream desert. We spent a total of 4 hours eating at our leisure, and had a great view of the festivities from our 1st floor window. We were the only English couple there and everyone else was Portuguese. They were all so welcoming, lots of chatter and laughter and it was a privilege to be with them on such an important evening. As we were walking past this restaurant, we were hungry and saw they had steamed fresh mussels so we walked in. We ordered a portion of mussels followed by prawns sautéed in olive oil and garlic which we shared. My wife ordered a chocolate mousse and I went for a local egg dessert called estaladiço served with black cherry soup. Overall this was not a meal we will remember. The mussels, although plump and meaty, were tasteless, the prawns were not deveined but were tasty thanks to the garlic.
