I have been in Cape Town for a few weeks. As a black woman I made the decision to ignore what everyone says about Cape Town being an untransformed, racist city. I’ve had some great people interactions while I have been here, but mainly with foreigners or former Joburgers who are visiting the city.
On 8 March 2018 I read about a comedy show (Laughs on Loop) at restaurant called Homage 1682 situated on 168 Loop street. New to the city, I booked a ticket and went by myself.
I walked into the restaurant behind 2 white people and there were 4 white people behind me.
A white male, who I later found out was Kyle Simon Krok, the owner/founder/creative director of Homage 1862 came towards the door , to seat the 2 people in front of me. He then completely ignored me, actually that is not the right description, I was invisible, he actually looked through me & then assisted the 4 white people behind me & showed them to their table. I stood there like a bit of an idiot waiting for him to come back, but he didn’t. Eventually one of the waiters, a black man who has probably seen alot of this totally unacceptable treatment of black people at Homage 1682 came to assist me. He saved the evening.
Kyle Simon Krok, I know this is Cape Town but as a black woman I am happy to not go where I am not welcome, put a sign out & say WHITES ONLY or NO BLACKS ALLOWED, take us back to the apartheid era, because your attitude does the exact same thing. I would rather spend my money where black people are welcome.
I stayed because I had already bought the ticket and didn’t want to give him (Kyle Simon Krok) the satisfaction of effectively throwing me out.
So much work to be done in this city! Homage 1682 absolutely disgusting behaviour and totally unacceptable!!!
I don’t even know why I wrote this because there were only 2 or 3 other people, other than employees, that were not white in the restaurant. Kyle Simon Krok clearly knows his market. So I doubt people will be supportive of this post, but this city and this country needs unity and the saying is true that evil people prosper because good people do nothing. Let’s all try and be good people. Big gestures are awesome, but let’s try and do the right...
Read moreEverytime I dine here it is a memorable happy experience. The food is up there with the best and the staff are friendly and helpful! Love the ambience and music and it is evident how well managed it is. Won over as a patron and will definitely be going back soon!
Highly recommend the vegetable curry and for an incredibly reasonable meal, grab a few plates amongst your table and share all the amazing (generous) portions of delectable fresh dishes. From first dates to ladies' night , never...
Read moreI must start with saying the food was really really GOOD.
My experience was a bit of flop. We had booked in advance for a large group for the beginning of December. My First choice for mains had to be changed due to limited portions then they ran out of the second choice and only once everyone else received their food did they realize this and I had to order a third time and ate after the group was finished.
REALLY GOOD...
