As someone living with celiac disease, I can’t express how rare it is to find a restaurant where I feel safe. So many places advertise gluten-free options but still can’t guarantee the absence of gluten or avoid cross-contamination. I’ve often called ahead to ask questions, only to be met with uncertainty or confusion—even when ordering something like “gluten-free pasta.” That level of risk, misunderstanding, and food trauma makes dining out a real challenge. A lot of people confuse celiac disease with gluten intolerance, but it’s actually much more serious. It’s an autoimmune condition where even the tiniest amount of gluten can trigger a damaging reaction in the body—so it’s closer to a severe allergy than just a sensitivity. That’s why finding a place like Col’Cacchio, where they truly understand the need for zero cross-contamination, means the world.
From the first phone call, even though they weren’t completely familiar with celiac disease, they listened. I explained the cross-contamination risks, my severe sensitivity, and how important certain protocols are—and they didn’t just brush it off. They took every word seriously. When I arrived, even though the restaurant was very busy, they still took the time to walk through everything with me again, double-checked my order, and made sure it was handled correctly. That alone was impressive.
I’m extremely sensitive—even trace amounts of gluten can make me ill—but I didn’t get sick at all, either of the two times I’ve eaten there. In fact, the first night after eating at Col’Cacchio, I cried the next day. Not because I was sick—because I wasn’t. Because for once, I didn’t leave a restaurant anxious. I didn’t have to stress through my meal. I didn’t have to eat only half the plate “just in case.” I finished my food, and I felt normal—something many people with celiac disease never get to feel when dining out.
The managers are exceptional human beings. The first time, one came to our table to personally check in, ask if I was the one who called about celiac, and make sure everything was to my liking. The second time, we were greeted again on our way out with the same kindness. Not once was I made to feel like a burden. I wasn’t made to feel “special” in the uncomfortable way some restaurants do when they clearly don’t want to deal with your dietary needs. I was treated like everyone else—with respect, dignity, and genuine care.
And the food? Absolutely divine. You would never know it’s gluten-free. Whoever makes the food clearly puts love and attention into it. I didn’t feel left out. I didn’t feel like my plate was a “special” version of someone else’s meal. I just felt like I belonged.
Col’Cacchio Durbanville didn’t just serve me a safe meal—they gave me peace of mind, and for someone with celiac disease, that is priceless.
So yes, always call ahead, explain your needs (because every celiac reacts differently), and double-check. But know that if you do go, you will be heard, valued, and safe.
Thank you, Col’Cacchio...
Read moreAbout a month ago we ordered 2 simple pizzas ( 2 x Regina Pizzas) from Uber eats during midweek. We paid the extra express Uber eats fee to get the delivery sooner. After an hour our food did not arrive but we could see on the App that the driver had seemingly collected it but had gone to a different house. After calling the restaurant the manageress confirmed that was not our food as they were still busy with it. By the time that driver got back to the restaurant he cancelled on the app with me and a new driver was given the order. We waited about another 45 minutes with 2 more calls to the restaurant to find out what was going on and the last call to cancel the order. The manageress assured me then that the food was ready and the driver was leaving with our food, so we kept the request. By the time the food was delivered it was cold and heating it in microwave just made it taste chewy and stale. I called the restaurant again and told the manageress I would personally stop by the restaurant the following day so she could take my complaint up with the owners.
I met with her the next day at the restaurant and gave her all my details, home address and cell number and I still have not heard anything back. Very poor customer care and this used to be our go to pizza restaurant in Durbanville. Seems like management or owners don't care about the poor service and cold food delivered. She had no real explanation why the simple order took so long other than it was the...
Read moreBest service I have had in a long time!
It was quite the adventure this past Saturday, where a friend of mine and I attempted the Olive Bistro after visiting the Rust-en-Vrede art gallery for their portrait awards, only to find they were fully booked and so we made our way to the center nearby in seek of warmth and good food on a cold drizzly day.
We decided upon Col'cacchio and were offered a corner table near the kitchen. We were welcomed with smiles and our waiter was absolutely amazing! He was so attentive, considerate and polite, honestly the type of service I have only experienced at 4-5 star restaurants. I ordered some Earl grey tea and when it arrived my cup was warmed, something I hardly ever experience. We had a starter of garlic 'bread'/pizza and it was so light and tasty, even though we had hardly used our utensils, we were brought new ones and when our mains arrived it was served and made to absolute perfection, I enjoyed every bite of my pulled beef pasta and my friend felt the same about his meal of chicken pasta.
We were left to converse to our hearts content and checked up on at appropriate intervals. What a gem of a place that added to the beauty of the day. Would hands down recommend Col'Cacchio...
