Prawnstar has come a long way since its popular pop-up days, and the opening of their physical store has firmly established them as a noteworthy player in the local food scene.

I had the opportunity to try their food on three separate occasions—twice in-store and once via delivery. On all occasions, the food quality remained consistently high and true to the flavors that made them popular from the start.

We ordered the fish and prawns, which were both well-prepared and packed with flavor. I personally prefer prawns that aren’t drenched in sauce, and they were cooked exactly to my liking. For those who enjoy saucier dishes, a side of sauce is provided to customize your meal as desired.

The fish was fried to golden perfection—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and notably free of any oily aftertaste.

We also tried the lamb sliders, which pleasantly surprised me. I’m not usually drawn to burgers or sliders, but these were a clear exception. The lamb was juicy, well-seasoned, and flavorful without being overpowering. The quality of the meat really shone through.

The prawn boil lived up to its reputation, with a bold, slightly spicy sauce.

Service at the restaurant was friendly and efficient. It’s also evident that the team is committed to growing and improving, which is impressive for a relatively new establishment in the competitive restaurant industry.

Overall, Prawnstar delivers on both taste...

After discovering Prawn Star at events across Durban in 2023, it quickly became my family's go to food truck at various events. Our favourites were the fish and chips, Prawns rice and slaw and the wagyu burgers (the best burger I ever had).

My friends were visiting Durban from London and Johannesburg and I was raving to them about a pop up that I love that has now opened a restaurant in Durban and suggested we meet there for lunch.

How embarrassing it was for me, when the food was not at all like the food I remember from the pop ups.

The crayfish platter was undercooked with little sauce and butter. The beef strips were overdone, a very poor cheap cut of meat was used. Lacked flavor and a horrible dish overall. The Prawns and rice was the only average dish. That too...below average. Let's not even talk about the side salad and side vegetables...which left much to be desired. Our garlic bread had to be canceled as we were done with our meals before it arrived.

The waitress, Zama, young, energetic and eager and whilst I applaud her enthusiasm for her job, kept insisting that we must choose certain items and spoke above us.

My friend, a food blogger, was really unimpressed with all 3 dishes. I was embarrassed and disappointed.

I chose Prawn Star for our once a year girls catch up and I have such regrets.

I'll stick to the pop ups but won't be visiting the...

Honestly one of the most disappointing experiences in a long time.

My gf and I have been trying out all the food trends that we see on social media and we noticed how much hype prawn star had been getting. Unfortunately we was only able to stop by at 8pm therefore only giving us an hour to dine.

Upon entering we was met with staff memebers who didn't even acknowledge us as they were in a rush to cash up and head home as well as a waiter who gave us not even 60 seconds to choose a meal.

we ordered the wagyu burger and chicken burger, which didn't take long to be prepared which was good but was shocked to find out that the restaurant didn't have any type of sauce for our fries. When asked if we could get the kitchen to give us some of the burger sauce we was given a bowl not even big enough for an egg.

The menu showed R140 for the waygy burger and R80 for the chicken burger but when we got the bill we was surprised to see R180 for the waygu burger and R120 for the chicken as there was an additional R40 per burger just for fries which we didn't even eat due to "sauce shortages"

whilst all this is happening we was more frustrated to have our waiter laugh in our face as if its not a big problem and then "school girl" chat and point us with other staff like we was in the wrong.

very few restaurants leave a bitter taste in my mouth to not come back and this is...

Saw the online tik tok hype about the sea food boil and decided to try out this restaurant. The menus mentioned shakes. Asked the waiter what flavors of milkshake they had and she said that they don't sell milkshakes and the menu was wrong. I then asked about the fresh fish option on the menu and she said they didn't have any fresh fish. At this point I was already very unimpressed. I ordered a fried fish option with sides of chips and "fusion slaw" I was served a very small, sad piece of fish and a heap of uncooked cabbage which was meant to be coleslaw. There was no dressing or mayonnaise on the raw cabbage rendering it completely inedible. The sea food boil was very average and the crayfish meat was very bland and stale. When the bill came, we asked the waiter for a pen to note down her tip and she said that even if we wrote it down there, the waiters don't get the money. That was just a shameful comment and a very poor reflection of the owners to take their waiters tips. This restaurant was definitely not my cup of tea and will not be back again...
