What a wonderful find! As a previous review has said - absolutely superb from start to finish. From the friendly & speedy response to our online reservation request, through the genuinely warm welcome on arrival, the top service from Endria & Valerie & team, the menu choices specialising in fresh fish & tender meats, and last but certainly not least, the cooking & presentation of Johan & his team. My wife had the 40 day aged sirloin & I had the signature Thai Kingklip. Both were so good that we had to share each others! And that’s after we shared a portion of Cajun calamari for starters. The steak was cooked exactly as per my wife’s request & served beautifully, accompanied by the highest quality chips (seems the wrong word for culinary excellence!) we have had for many years - beautifully fluffy inside but dry & crisp on the outside. And my Thai Kingklip can only be described as a Taste Sensation!! Add the personal & friendly touch of Endria & Johan & their team & it would be hard to think of a better culinary experience. We have been privileged to eat at a lot of top restaurants in the UK but Cafe 1904 is right up there. A huge thank you to the whole Team for giving us a night to remember....

Where to start, an absolute GEM of a place in the cultural heritage Centre of Hermanus. Owners Endria and Johan cook up an absolute storm with a small kitchen, small menu and quaint little cozy restaurant. Quality produce, made to order, delicious flavours. I ate Springbok carpaccio for starters which came in round slices, absolutely delicious with Chef Johan putting his own twist on the dish. For main I had the seafood masalla curry, which I cannot recommend enough. Full of fish, calamari, mussels and packed with masala & curry flavour with a hint of coconut at the end. I tasted the ribeye, 400g, beautifully cooked and basted and soft as butter. The seafood platter for one is more than enough to feed any 1 person.

Now the ambiance, absolutely brilliant. The chef and owners explain the menu and walk around the restaurant. The waiters are brilliantly trained knows the menu by heart. It's a small restaurant and we interacted with tables around us which was an awesome experience.

Of you are in Hermanus, looking for good food, take my word. Café 1904 is competing for the top restaurant...

It is a nice place but I expected more. Specifically: the generator just makes too much noise during load shedding, it made the lights flicker and regular intervals which isn’t a big deal but the main problem is the noise. me and my girlfriend really disliked that the waiters come with the menu to your table and make you pick on the spot, instead of just handing out menus, pushing a bit for starters and wine. But that is personal. it did led to choices we regret, the tuna steak was very pricy but very big and hardly seasoned, which can be a good thing if you are a Tuna lover. As a result, my girlfriend only could finish 1/4 of it which made her feel guilty. The ox tail was very fatty which I like so no complaints there. The food came within 5-10 minutes, which was also a bit surprising. the people were very friendly but at some point I saw a man, probably the owner, walking around in the kitchen with the a big knife and a bit angry (I guess there was something wrong with it) but the way he held the knife and the way he walked around made me feel sorry...
