I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sonny and Irene and , and I must say, it was an outstanding experience from start to finish.
The restaurant boasts a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a decor that blends modern elegance and cozy comfort. The ambiance is both lively and relaxed, making it an ideal spot for any occasion.
The breakfast offerings were particularly impressive. The portions were generous, ensuring a satisfying start to the day. Each dish was prepared with care and presented beautifully, showcasing the kitchen's commitment to quality.
What truly set this visit apart was the exceptional service. One staff member, in particular, stood out Lena (or Lesna). From the moment we were greeted, Lena's warmth and attentiveness made us feel like valued guests. On our second visit, we were pleasantly surprised when Lena remembered our names, a personal touch that added a special charm to our experience. His service was impeccable, balancing professionalism with genuine friendliness.
The restaurant's cleanliness was also noteworthy. The dining area was spotless, and the overall environment felt fresh and well-maintained, contributing to a comfortable dining experience.
In summary, Sonny and Irene offers not only delicious food and generous portions but also an atmosphere that is both welcoming and vibrant. The exceptional service provided by staff members like Lena elevates the dining experience, making it truly memorable. I look forward to returning and highly recommend this establishment to others seeking a top-tier...
Read moreIncredibly disappointing experience at Sonny and Irene today.
To start off with, the hostess was not welcoming, warm or friendly. She was extremely short, came across as “bossy” and almost rude.
We had been put on a waiting list as they were quite busy. There was no issue with this at all - we were happy to wait to be seated. We were told the waiting time would be 5-25 minutes, which was a reasonable time for us, so we accepted and gave our details & contact number - as requested by the hostess, in order for her to contact us when a table opened up for us.
We never got contacted when a table was ready - we stood waiting to be seated for over an hour (wait was supposed to be 25 mins max) in hopes we would be contacted by the hostess who took our details.
On top of that - we watched as people who arrived long after we did, get helped and seated. These were also people who were added to the waiting list and stood waiting outside to be seated.
We ended up giving up on getting a table and instead went next door to Sonny & Irene Pastry Bar, as we were starving at this point. The service here was also poor - again, they took long to serve us, someone then came to take our order, but was half listening and she ended up walking away and not fulfilling our order. Eventually someone else took our order - part of the order was wrong as well, as if anything more could have gone wrong at this point.
The one positive was that the almond croissant was delicious, but that’s pretty much the only good thing I can say...

I’ve been to Sonny and Irene on two occasions now, and the food is exorbitantly priced for the portion size or overall perceived quality of the dish. On my first visit, I had the flatbread eggs. The meal was good, but in my opinion, worth R115 at the most, not R145. The second time round, I had the halloumi and corn fritter. The meal was quite heavy and needed some freshness, perhaps in the form of a squeeze of lemon. Again, the meal was quite overpriced for the portion size (R130 at most, not R155). On my first visit, I had the honeycomb latte, which was absolutely delicious! The waiter was so uninterested that he didn’t explain how the honeycomb was supposed to dissolve in the iced latte… Yet it took 35 minutes for this iced latte ro arrive. He was no where to be seen most of the time and brought the bill (which we didn’t ask for at the time), basically prompting us to leave! A peculiar decision, considering that they were quite quiet at the time and he didn’t check if we wanted anything else (from their pastry trolley or from the rest of the menu). The second time, I sampled the iced hazelnut dark iced latte. It was alright… Service was much better on my second visit.
Overall, I find that their food is alright. Good, but not worth the exorbitant price. Service is highly dependent on how...
