I had the pleasure of dining at Grand Pavillion restaurant this past Tuesday.
We were a group of 30 people and the restaurant was happy to accomodation us with no deposit.
The set up was a bit strange as they split us into two unequal sized groups. We were however fortunate enough to get tables with a beautiful ocean view for some of us. The weather was quite windy, even for Cape Town, the wind actually blew open the glass door I was seated next to. The resourceful waiter actually had to wedge the door shut with a few corks.
The bar is fully stocked and lemonade and a shot of grenadine, which is pretty difficult to find, which tasted sweet and flavouful.
Due to the size of the group one group was done eating by the time the group I was in was even served our meal.
With regards to the food they had many items on special which is a great for a Tuesday night.
Unfortunately no vegan or vegetarian options were on special that night. There was a vegan section on the menu offering about four options.
I opted for the 7 Spiced Tofu steak served with vegetables and gremolata. The tofu was grilled to perfection, though it was cut into strips and not a steak per se, and the flavours of the spices did not quite come through. The vegetables, grilled peppers, onions, tender stem broccoli, and olives served with the gremolata was delicious. Though not quite what was listed on the menu.
I also opted for a side of the garlic mash which was soft, buttery and flavouful.
Overall a good experience, I will be back perhaps. If I do visit again it will definitely in a smaller group, and perhaps would prefer to be seated in Harry's which I believe is separate to the restaurant and is located in closer to the kitchen and has a larger bar. I am looking forward to trying the gnocchi which the waiter had...
Read moreWould have given this place 5 stars, but 2 seems legit. Celebrated my moms retirement here with my whole family. We booked a table for 18:30 arrived abit late due to traffic , when we arrived I walked 1st in Gentleman greeted us outside and inside another gentleman greeted us again by the little front desk politely. A lade wearing a greenish shirt suddenly appeared I could see the look on her face thinking we at the wrong place but the guy behind the desk was so cool and quickly took us away to our table. U know that look that u get 👀. Any way our waiter was cool thou , funny 😁 he made us feel so at home even told me i must look after my mom from this day going forward. When my wife booked our table she asked if this place was child friendly whereby the reply was yes. My little nephew was also with us he's about 3 years old and can be hand full. Just before our mains or after my daughter came to us and said the lady with the greenish top told her in a very rude manner that my lill nephew is a disturbance to the other people in the restaurant. That was the same lady who when we 1st entered wanted to interrupt the gentleman behind the counter with the look on her face !!!! that are u at the right place will u be able to afford it look on her face. Why she tried to interrupt the gentleman who was 1st before her behind the counter still puzzles me at times she should have just stayed and let him welcome us because he was doing a great job indeed. 1st time experience here will definitely not go back there and I've been looking forward in coming here . This was the perfect opportunity to visit and celebrate my mom's retirement also. But ya food...
Read moreWe recently traveled from Namibia to Cape Town for the festive holidays and decided to treat ourselves to New Year’s lunch at Grand Pavilion. I had made a reservation weeks in advance and even paid a deposit via Dineplan to ensure everything was in order. However, our experience didn’t quite match the expectations set by the restaurant.
Upon arrival, the waiter attempted to seat us inside, despite my reservation specifying a table with a view of the outside. When I pointed this out, she seemed confused and left us standing around, clueless. Eventually, the manager stepped in and directed us to our correct table.
We started with sushi, which was fairly average. For the main, I ordered the prawn pasta, which was absolutely fantastic — flavorful and well-prepared. My husband opted for one of the blackboard specials, which he enjoyed. However, after having the starter, I was quite full and asked the server if I could have my barely touched pasta packed up to take away and enjoy later. Unfortunately, he seemed not to hear me, and much to my devastation, my pasta was discarded instead.
When it came time to pay the bill, we noticed that the R800 deposit I had paid wasn’t reflected on the final amount. We had to point this out to the server before it was adjusted.
While the food itself (particularly the pasta) was enjoyable, the service left much to be desired. The confusion at the start, the miscommunication about the takeaway, and the billing oversight definitely marred an otherwise promising experience. Considering we had traveled such a long way, we were disappointed with the overall execution, especially after the effort I made...
