Billie Jean — Restaurant in Busan

Well, I've been there twice, but never on a busy weekend night...I think maybe a Sunday and a Wednesday, and early at that. If I was to design a cocktail bar, this is about what I would create... just a great layout, offering a lot of chances to check out the other patrons and perhaps mingle if desired, but also some out of the way tables off to the sides that would work for groups or couples who wanted some space. Reasonable prices, decent (but not great) drinks, and seemingly a little something for everyone. Bartenders are fairly friendly, service is fine, and music isn't overly loud. Although I'm a foreigner myself, I think I would prefer a few less foreigners but the overall balance was pretty good when I was there...I mean, Haeundae is where foreigners go in Busan (and really, in Korea for that matter)...it is a major hangout spot. But so do many Koreans... Billy Jean has been a "hot place" for a few years now, and to my knowledge has no real competition....the other choices around Busan are either clubs (loud, expensive, and very cliquey and hard to socialize in), Korean-style bars, total expat hangouts (usually just awful in every way--you don't want to get me started...), and some other spots that just don't seem to attract any customers. Korea needs 3 or 4 spots like this in every city, is all I can say, instead of essentially about one in the whole country..

3.5 stars, because the drinks could be a lot better...but, as always, you get what you pay for, and some of the drinks (if memory serves me) are only like 5000 won, which, in Korea, is as cheap as it gets. Good music too. ...

This place isn't for everybody. It can be loud, smoky, and filled with obnoxious people. It has become very popular on the weekends and is guaranteed to be packed come rain or moonlight. The cocktails are delicious and the staff is usually friendly. The best night in my opinion is Tuesday. They have a wing night. They are the meatiest wings in the area. However, there are only three flavors: mild, hot, or insane. . . and No Blue Cheese, but at least they're meaty. I've heard that Thursday nights are good too, but I have yet to experience it. A bar with a name like this had to be rewarded with a visit, and i wasn't dissapointed. My first night was on a friday and it wasn't very busy but the atmosphere was relaxed. Staff was very friendly and some of them speak English. I returned the next day because i was told that on saturdays things would be quite different. And it was ... the place was packed and overall vibe was excellent. Korean guests were very foreigner-friendly and i had a great night out in Busan.
