Lavarr Café, Seogwipo: A soulful sip and bite in an artsy space!
Nestled in the heart of Seogwipo, Jeju Island, Lavarr Café is far from your typical coffee stop. Housed in a beautifully restored three-story building that was once a 50-year-old bathhouse, this café is a stunning blend of history, culture, and artistry. The original bathhouse, which operated from 1971 until 2017, has been thoughtfully transformed into a multi-cultural space.
Walking into Lavarr, you immediately feel the gentle embrace of natural wood tones, warm lighting, and a quiet atmosphere that encourages reflection and relaxation. Each floor offers a unique vibe, culminating in a rooftop that provides a serene view of Seogwipo’s cityscape and ocean breeze.
Lavarr Latte (7,500 KRW) — Salted Peanut Latte This latte is a masterclass in balance and creativity. The rich, creamy texture envelops your palate with a pronounced nuttiness that is both comforting and indulgent. The salted peanut flavour shines through boldly, enhanced by subtle toffee undertones and a buttery finish. The salt, described as the “jewel of the sea,” adds a savoury counterpoint that perfectly offsets the latte’s natural sweetness. It’s a sensory homage to the ocean that surrounds Jeju, awakening your taste buds with every sip.
Kiss Latte (7,500 KRW) — Buttercream Latte For those with a sweet tooth, the Kiss Latte is a decadent treat. This latte combines the smooth bitterness of coffee with the luscious sweetness of buttercream frosting. The texture is velvety and rich, with a slight salty note that elevates the flavour complexity. It’s like sipping a dessert in a cup — luxurious, comforting, and utterly satisfying.
Lavarr Cookie (4,000 KRW) The cookie is a thick, chunky delight packed with 100% organic Korean wheat, mandarin marmalade, and an abundance of roasted nuts including hazelnuts and pecans. Each bite offers a perfect harmony of sweet and nutty flavors—the bright citrus notes from the marmalade cut through the deep, caramelized richness of the toasted nuts. The buttery, earthy undertones make this cookie a perfect companion to the café’s signature lattes.
Lavarr Café is a place to slow down, savour thoughtfully crafted drinks and treats, and soak in the calming ambiance. It’s a beautiful, tranquil spot to unwind...
Read moreamazing relaxing atmosphere and great architecture! had the roasted brie and basil sandwich along with the lavarr latte and retro green. everything was so tasty! and staff were all lovely! highly recommend!! 🙌🏻🥳
architecture: Imagine this. You climb the the steep hills of Jeju, yearning for a coffee and food after being belted by the intense heat. As you arrive the shop front, you’re met by dark marbled travertine reminiscent of water leaking out the cracks of the wall. You turn right and the atmosphere is dimmed. Your senses are dulled and desensitised from the heat and passing of cars. As you approach the corridor, space is compressed, and light spills from around the corner steering your growing curiosity of the where abouts of the coffee. Punctures of light creep in from the small windows. As you turn the corner a garden meets your first gaze in the background and materiality transitions to a pale yellow taken by the relic jimjilbang tiles and the remnant pale blue spa. These become art piece objects tied into the room and anchoring central focal point. Water flows from the column across the steel table reflecting colours of the garden outside and just enough water leeks down into the spa splashing, and evoking the memory of the jimjilbang experience. Read moreI really enjoyed my time here. The gentleman at the front counter was patient with my poor Korean speaking skills and spoke to me in English and we navigated this well enough.
Out of that interaction I was able to order an incredible yogurt bowl with cherries and coconut, and an absolutely stunning cup of iced matcha with oat milk. I can definitely see why this locally sourced Jeju matcha beverage is a signature at this cafe. The technique employed is leagues above other matcha I’ve had. My palate can’t discern much difference from the Kyoto matcha I like to drink, but the form factor paired with the taste he has crafted is exceptional.
I cherished this opportunity to go here and I thanked my friends who suggested here. I am going back again tomorrow.
Service did take a bit longer, but I genuinely did not mind waiting, it was a one man show in the shop at the time. And for the atmosphere, it’s pretty inside and the patio looks very nice. I think if one of coming here please expect something of a high calibre and for something like that it takes time. I noticed that I crossed paths with lots of other international travellers here. Seems like a hotspot for us.
Enjoy yourself if you have a chance to go. I know I certainly did.
Thank...
