We did not have a good experience at this restaurant.
We came here because it was highly rated on google, so we thought it would be a nice place to get seollangtang (bone broth) since we were craving some.
Jinju Jib is located in a small alleyway and felt like a hole in the wall establishment. When it was time for us to order, my husband used Korean to order two seollantangs, each listed for $12,000 Won. A middle aged woman taking orders rejected his request. She insisted we order the “no.1 soup” and kept shaking off his request for seollangtang.
After the third time requesting, my husband finally asked in Korean “seollangtang, oppsayo?” while pointing at the menu on the wall. The woman did not directly answer that question other than insisting that we order something else.
Now thinking back on it, we should have left right then. So, after all of that, our food came. The ox tail soup came and it was good. But when we saw the final price it was more than expected. The soup we wanted was 12,000 won each (around $8.00) while the ox tail soup was 32,000 Won each (around $23.00).
The price for ox tail wasn’t too bad considering that it is an expensive ingredient and the soup was pretty good. The problem was that we left feeling scammed because she didn’t give us a choice, or suggest that we try the most expensive thing on the menu, she refused to accept our order. It wasn’t an upsell, it was an up-told and we barely had enough cash to pay the bill at the time.
To add insult to injury, the native Korean customers were able to order seollangtng just fine. During the entire interaction, no one (including the staff or customers) said anything when they witnessed this act. Needless to say I was furious and vowed to warn other travelers.
There are many MANY wonderful bone broth establishments. If they insist you to order something else, do yourself a...
Read moreWe had a hard time searching for the restaurant because it was in a little alley, turning left from a ginseng store in the big street of nandemun. The personnel was nice, but hardly spoke any english, so be prepared. Oxtail soup was insipid but you can the the oxtail meat together with special sauce and veggies, which is very tasty. The kimchi, is the best I have ever tried in Korea, very local and...
Read moreHearty comfort food! Ox tail soup and beef brisket soup. I will always remember this place. When I was in Seoul to attend a wedding, I want to find this place, but I could not remember where it was. Plus, I couldn't speak Korean, all I had was the area and an old picture on my smartphone. Luckily, we showed the picture around and found our way to the restaurant. We were so happy to have...
