D’tablas restaurant (in Calle Rafael Altamira beside the junction of Calle Mayor and rambla Mendez Nunez) was a cheap and cheerful tapas restaurant. Seating can be a bit cramped - it gets very busy - and the wooden benches aren't the most comfortable. The restaurant operates a simple system. All the tapas are the same price (1.70 euros in February 2025) and there is no menu. You order drinks, and a waiter comes round the restaurant with a large tray of assorted tapas. Those include fried calamari rings, iberico ham and cheese, two croquettes, one baby squid on a slice of baguette, two king prawns, Spanish sausage, a few fritters, a little portion of albondigas, or a handful of chips. See the photos on other reviews. You choose as many as you like, and the next tray comes round after everyone has been served. The tapas come on small wooden blocks - no knives, forks or plates - and staff simply count the number of blocks left on your table to calculate the bill. So you can keep track of your bill yourself as you go along. If you're really ravenous either go elsewhere (portions are all about the size of two bites), or order extra tapas. But it was a fun eating experience and good value: house wine only 2 euros a glass. The restaurant is very popular with locals - it was full on my first visit so I had to come back. I used it twice in my 4 day stay in Alicante - recommended to try it. Atmosphere was vibrant and noisy. Service is pretty swift. Sitting near the service hatch gets a better choice of tapas - if you’re near the front door there’s not so many dishes left on the tray! Lots have been taken by previous tables. Also, I’d guess it’s not an ideal restaurant for vegetarians -...
Read moreThis place is cheap and cheerful, and every time we went, or simply happened to walk by, it was always packed. Sometimes we saw a long queue of people waiting outside to be seated (there's inside seating only). However, I don't think this place is that special, tbh. First off the music is extremely loud, which in turn leads customers to speak even more loudly, in order to be heard by their fellow diners. The food is okay and tasty, but nothing exceptional nor particularly authentic (I saw mini English breakfasts, with eggs, sausages etc... being served as tapas. I certainly never saw that in Andalusia). The place is a tapas bar: you basically sit at a table and don't order food off a menu, but wait for the waiters to walk around the room with big trays on top of which are loads of single dishes that you take from the tray (or leave, if that particular dish doesn't tickle your fancy). There are infinite rounds of this, with different types of tapas, all priced the same. At the end, when you ask for the bill, one of the waiters will count the number of empty dishes you have on your table and add them up (plus drinks, of course). This system allows for a long permanence at the table, because you know some food is 100% always on the way. By the same token, I can't see how they manage with the long queue of customers waiting outside. The staff was friendly. D'Tablas is in central Alicante, but it seemed to me a little tourist-y and there are certainly much better, more authentic restaurants, with a higher quality of produce for a very...
Read moreExtremely Rude and Unwelcoming Staff – Avoid if You Have Children. I am writing this review deeply disappointed and upset by the terrible service we experienced at this restaurant. We wanted to have dinner with our small children, who were tired and hungry in their strollers, but were immediately turned away at the door. The waiter was extremely rude and unsympathetic. He refused to let us bring in the strollers ( that was very small travell strollers) and made no effort to help us. When we asked if they had high chairs for our babies, he looked at me in a condescending and humiliating way and said, "You can just put them on your laps in our very high, unsafe chairs." His suggestion was not only inappropriate but also unsafe. When I pointed out that we had been to the restaurant before with strollers, he completely ignored me and just turned his back. It was clear they simply did not want guests with small children. This is incredibly unsympathetic and unprofessional. We left deeply disappointed, with hungry and sad children. The treatment was completely unacceptable. Not to mention food is so average and overrated, we just want to go there since it was close to our hotel. If you want Pincho/ Tappas, Lizzaran has much better food and...
