Have visited numerous Michelin star restaurants for a decade now. On our recent trip to Barcelona we dined at Lasarte, Disfrutar, Cocina Hermanos Torres & Angle.
So, Angle. Hard to write an imperfect review when I had a good execpirence and the place deserve it.
First, the food. Food is measured, among other criteria, by whether or not we had at least one course that makes us want to revisit the restaurant. Angle offers excellent food but I'm afraid that most can be found, in a similar form, in other restaurants as well. Some in other ABaC group restaurants (we've dined at ABaC before and the experiences overlapped).
Service. The risk in any high-end restaurant is getting a cold, military service. The challenge is to be extremely professional while giving a sense of warmth and welcoming. Service was warm and we felt welcome. We enjoyed our time their with the staff. The are all friendly and nice. You can see they work with passion. However, service is not as meticulous as one would find in a Michelin star restaurant especially with two stars. For instances: Dishes are not cleared off the table simultaneously. Two waiters stood close to us and had a quick, friendly chat. Waiter was softly singing to a background song. Did not offer to take my jacket off the chair. Mistake in the bill. Overcharged. (Too) many unprofessional behaviors that spoiled the overall service.
Wine service. Best part of our experience. Sommelier was professional and attentive. Listen carefully to our preferences and successfully match all the right wines.
Atmosphere. Intimate, warm and spacious. One constructive feedback. Harsh lighting is unfriendly to photographers and makes it challenging creating appealing photos advocating for the place.
Value. Excellent value.
On another note, the Michelin guide is very inconsistent in Barcelona. We ate at terrible one star restaurants in the past and overrated 3 stars. Michelin overrated Angle.
According to the Michelin guide: 1 star = A very good restaurant in its category 2 stars = Excellent cooking, worth a detour 3 stars = Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey
Angle is a classic one star restaurant. I would admit that in some areas Angle moves closer to a two stars standard but it's not consistent across the board.
If you are traveling to Barcelona for the first time and looking for a fine-dining experience, I would definitely consider Angle. If you are a veteran in high dining experience and are looking for an exceptional institute, I would reconsider.
So our experience was very good but didn't live up to the high expectations that come with a 2...
Read moreAngle, under the guidance of Jordi Cruz, presents itself as a polished, contemporary fine dining destination in Barcelona. With a multi-course tasting menu promising nuance and refinement, the restaurant aims high—but on this visit, the experience fell notably short of Michelin standards.
Service, which began smoothly, became noticeably rushed early in the meal. By the second course served since being seated, the pace had accelerated uncomfortably, with staff occasionally bumping into one another and reaching across the table mid-bite. The choreography one expects in a Michelin-starred setting was absent, replaced by a sense of urgency that diminished the overall experience.
Attention to detail was inconsistent. Crumbs from earlier dishes remained on the table through much of the meal, and the bread—though pleasant in flavor—was presented unsliced, leading to an unnecessarily awkward and messy interruption in flow. Cutlery showed visible water spots, and several plates arrived with faint residue in areas untouched by food, subtle but noticeable distractions in what should be a pristine environment.
Efforts to engage the diner were minimal. At no point during the 16-course experience were we asked how we were enjoying the meal, and the only meaningful interaction came after dessert, when coffee was offered. For those not drinking wine, no alternative pairings were suggested or provided, creating a missed opportunity to elevate the non-alcoholic experience alongside the food.
As for the cuisine itself, while technical execution was sound and presentation was clean, the flavors often lacked vibrancy. Many of the courses leaned toward subtlety, but too often crossed into the realm of the forgettable. A clearer sense of identity or contrast on the plate would have gone a long way in anchoring the meal.
Other tables could be overheard making similar comments, suggesting this was not an isolated perception. While the restaurant clearly has the foundations of a Michelin-star experience, it currently lacks the precision, warmth, and flavor clarity that elevate a meal from well-executed to...

We somehow managed to snag reservations at Angle while in Barcelona. We had an 8:45 pm reservation. When you arrive, you are on the ground level of a hotel/restaurant. They sit you in the lounge and offer you a glass of wine while you review the menu so you can inform them of allergies. After a few minutes, they take you to a bar area for a few quick bites before you as escorted upstairs to be seated for dinner. The dining room is quiet small so you see and hear most of the diners. As is typical with most Michelin restaurants, this was a tasting menu. Our menu was pretty heavy on seafood so I could imagine that bothering people who don't like seafood. I think about 4 of 6 savory courses had seafood as the star. We had three dessert courses and petit fours (chocolate bon bons). They also served a bread course (poppy and pumpkin seed) - we didn't finish our loaf so we asked if we could take the remainder home. They didn't have an issue with that but when it came time to leave, they couldn't find it so they just sent us home with a whole loaf. Overall, the food was really good and beautifully presented. I personally enjoyed the focus on seafood and it being a fusion of Spanish and Asian flavors. The only thing I disliked about the experience was the ambiance in the restaurant. It was so quiet in the restaurant that I felt like I need to whisper at my table so I didn't disturb the other diners. This is also a long meal so be prepared - I think it was...
