Read moreWe had a positively delightful steak dinner at the Caminito Steak House yesterday. This attractive little establishment is wedged in between other enterprises just four blocks from the beach. It is long and narrow with beautiful paintings of cities in Buenos Aires bedecking the walls.
We began with an order of chicken empenadas. They arrived at our table piping hot and glistening from the fryer. The exterior had a perfect crunch yielding way to the flavorful interior stuffing. They were absolutely delicious! Paired with a cold glass of sangria, we were pleased right from the first bite.
Next we ordered the solomillo steak along with the plate of grilled vegetables and their special creamy potatoes. I had asked if they had filet mignon on the menu, and they said they did not, but that the solomillo was similar. A solomillo is a beef tenderloin cut, from the center of the loin and considered a high-quality cut. We feasted our eyes on the beautiful steak cuts which arrived, accompanied by two small 'pots' of seasoning, along with the side dishes we had ordered. The steak was very flavorful, but I did find some parts of it to be a little less tender than a filet mignon. The center of the steak cut they served was filet mignon-level tenderness. The ends were a bit tough. The grilled vegetables were nicely seasoned and arrayed for visual pleasure. The creamy potatoes were delectable. They included a mild cheese and light seasoning for an overall A-game side dish. Along with a nice bottle of red wine, we delighted in our meal. Of course, it was all far too much, and we each took home half of each dish to enjoy the next day.
Service: Our original server (we did not get his name) was polite but not amiable. He took our order and served our meal with a cool, distracted look. My dining companion generously commented to me that perhaps he just was having a bad day. However, as we were finishing our meal a new server began to take care of us. His name was Humberto. He was very amiable and interacted with us as valued guests. Upon our request, he boxed up each of our delicious take-home meals and returned them to us with a smile. He asked if we wanted dessert but we were so full from the steak and potato dinner we declined. Then, he stepped out for 5 minutes while we were enjoying the last of our wine. He returned and deftly presented to us on one plate an Argentinian pastry he had just purchased for us from a shop down the street. Having had a few more minutes to digest, we sampled the pastry. It was devine! What a lovely thing for him to do. In any case, his smile and amiability was the perfect ending to a delightful meal at Caminito Grill. This restaurant will stay on our list...

I wanted to share my recent experience at this restaurant, just like a regular diner. We had a reservation for four people and got our table right when we arrived, which was nice even though the place was busy. The service was okay, considering the crowd.
However, things took a bad turn when we ordered two servings of mixed meat cooked medium. When the food came, it was clear that the meat was undercooked. Even without cutting it, I could tell it was more rare than medium. I knew from my own cooking experience that applying pressure can tell you how well-done meat is. We asked the kitchen to cook it the way we wanted, but they disagreed and said we were mistaken. It was disappointing to see the chef, who was dressed quite casually, cut the meat into thin strips instead of addressing the issue professionally. I get that they were busy, but it felt like they didn't care much about our food.
This was my second time here. The first visit was great with flavorful cured meat that tasted better. Sadly, this time was different. Not only did we have an issue with the meat, but we also got a bill that had an extra 20 euros on it. Maybe it was a mistake, but it added to our disappointment. After this visit, I can't really recommend this place anymore. It's possible they're trying to save time and money by taking shortcuts, as even the sauces seemed rushed and not as good as before.
To sum it up, my recent experience was a far cry from my first enjoyable visit. The food quality has slipped, and the way they handled our concerns left a lot to be desired. I had hoped to keep recommending this place, but unfortunately, I can't do that anymore. It's a shame that they seem to be cutting corners and compromising on the things that used to make...
