We think this place is overrated. The food was okay. We tried 4 dishes: the tempura was done well, it was seasoned properly and came out pretty dry and not oily. The yakisoba and grilled steak were average. The tuna tataki (20 euro) was a bit weird, they pretty much stir fried the parts that are not suitable for sashimi (e.g. the ends) with soy sauce. Shouldn't tuna tataki be made with a torch, or maybe that's Barcelona style? The sashimi didn't look great quality and we didn't order.
What's really missing from this place is the service. First of all, we didn't see a single japanese chef or server that night (we speak both Japanese and Chinese so it's easy to tell). The server showed a "poker face" the entire night and we didn't feel very welcomed. Nobody offered to refill our tea although we were the only table for the first 35 minutes we ate there, and the same waiter walked by our table at least 5 times and didn't notice the empty cup. A small cup of green tea was charged 2 euro each, not sure if it's the norm in Spain but not the case in Japan or North America.
The restaurant deco was nice and I can see they position themselves as a high end Japanese restaurant, just unfortunately the service was sub par. That's the only Japanese place we've been to in the city so we don't know how it's comparable to the others. But a neighborhood Japanese eater in Vancouver will beat this one easily. Not...
Read moreI came here with my partner tonight and it was one the best Japanese meals I’ve had in my life. The sushi selection was incredible. The standout was the tuna and ebi nigiri - I normally hate tuna but this tuna was the nicest fish I’ve ever eaten in in whole life. I was pleasantly surprised with what fish ended up being my favourite. This was the nicest nigiri I’ve ever eaten. The chicken karaage was perfectly seasoned and crispy. The udon soup with broth and beef was insanely delicious - the broth was perfect and rich, they were the nicest udon noodles I’ve ever tried (you could tell they were fresh) and the portion was very large so very good value for its price (it was €12). Service was super fast. The waiters were super polite. The general ambience of the restaurant was peaceful and lovely. The whole meal was spectacular.
For any non-vegetarian person who hasn’t been here before, I’d recommend the udon noodles with the broth and beef. It’s one of the cheapest main items on the menu yet still so perfect and filling. The rest of the menu is quite pricey (although very justified for its quality) so if you’re on a budget come here just for the udon soup and you’ll definitely leave with a smile on your face and a full stomach.
I can’t wait to come back here when I return to Barcelona next. Thank you for the wonderful meal. This is a meal I’ll remember for the...
Read moreWe are frequent customers of Koy Shunka and wanted to try their latest side kick. Food quality was good enough even some of the pieces didn’t have a lot of flavour and dishes were somehow overpowered by the dressing and sauces. Excessive use of toro in the menu and definitely too loud for a true Japanese experience - where silence and calm are very appreciated qualities - especially between the two main table staff shouting at each other pretty much all night long, which really created a not very pleasant atmosphere. Finally there was a flying bug on the bar where we were eating, probably not the best place to find it. Underwhelming and overpriced for the experience. Even when discussing these points with one of their staff members, they only could apologise. Some of their dishes such as oyster, navaja and salmonete sushi were outstanding. Head Chef checked with us twice on quality and service which was much appreciated. Beautiful spread of colours and...
