I’ll preface my rating by noting I believe I got unlucky with a poor menu on the night of my visit. The menu here changes regularly, and I just didn’t catch a great one. I was lured by the promise of mollejas, lengua, duck and other beautiful dishes - but sadly, nope. I would also say this rating is of the food. If you’re a wine geek, you’ll likely be very happy. I spend half my time in Montréal - so I recognize their excellent natural wine program. Onto the food. As noted, a rather plain menu with rather high prices for what are mostly small plates. Very basic. And overpriced. Minus 1 star for that. The second demerit is their unwillingness to half-portion plates. A good kitchen would happily do so to welcome clientele to try as much of their food as possible - and as you can see from the lentils and cap i pota dishes, would have been easy to do here. But no. Not very diner-friendly. In contrast to places like Besta, Nairod and Suru Bar, which happily do so. Given all this, we only chose to proceed with 3 dishes, and while good, were very homestyle and not particularly memorable. I could have easily made the lentil stew just as well at home… And Ca L’Estevet has a better cap i potat with more fancy schmancy service. Friendly staff, no complaints there. Oh well. I may return to give Monocrom another shot, with a hopefully more exciting menu. Or maybe it’s better suited for just a few glasses of natural wine and dessert… Can’t...
Read moreVery cosy atmosphere, perfect for couples or small groups. The staff was very knowledgeable with good wine recommendations in both Catalan, for me, and English, for my partner. The two waitresses managed the floor perfectly and were friendly without being overwhelming.
But of course, all of this is worthless if the food is not good. And boy, is the food at Monocrom good. This restaurant does not aim to earn Michelin stars but every dish we had was perfectly thought-out and cooked, with fantastic ingredients. The macaroni gratin that everyone raves about did not disappoint, but the croquetas, the mashed potato with sobrasada and fried egg, and the cod were all at least as good as the macaroni gratin. I can't remember the last time I left a restaurant not being able to decide which of the 5-6 dishes I tried was more exquisite. And all for what in my opinion is a very reasonable price considering the quality of the food and the wine - just a hair over €80 for two people including wine and dessert.
I can only congratulate all the staff at Monocrom and wish that I'll get a chance to visit...
Read moreWe went a couple of times with a reservation and the manager was always very unpolite to us for no reason. She treated us as if we were bothering her with our presence and made us feel very uncomfortable. The place could have potential, but unless the service improves there is no way it is worth a visit.
In reply to a comment from the owner. First of all, I AM NOT in the sector, so please don't assume things. Secondly, last time I visited we weren't asking for food (being 2 minutes past the time of kitchen closure) but just for enjoying a bottle of wine. Now, being denied that, I really question the name of the place as Natural Wine Bar, since apparently you can't have wine if the kitchen is closed. Thirdly, my review also refers to a previous visit I paid, when, in spite of having a reservation and being largely on time, we were still treated with no smiles and cheers but again as unwelcomed guests. I hope...
