Paradiso — Restaurant in Barcelona

Disappointed. I’ve been living in Barcelona for years and finally decided to visit Paradiso, as my friend was in town and this speakeasy is supposedly iconic. It all started out great. Even though it was a Monday evening, the atmosphere was lively and fun. Great lighting, music and the whimsical menu cards were impressive. Staff was really friendly. The drinks were definitely of high quality- I had “the secret of Java”. The presentation was impressive and if you have a sweet tooth like me, you’ll love it. I found the price on the higher end, but was kind of ok with it because of the experience itself. After an hour or so, we get invited to a “secret area” of the speakeasy and this is where things go sour. It was a small room with a big table and a few barstools around the walls. There are a few people in there already. I understand the concept of it all, but it felt underwhelming to get handed a normal looking menu card where all the drinks cost a flat €20, as opposed to what we had just seen in the main room. The room was really cold and it felt a little bit like one those bars you go to after all the clubs are closed. Massive difference from the main room. I wish we had just stayed there. I decided that the 20€ price point was way too much, since the other factors that added value were not there: cool menu card, whimsical vibe etc. it was just a normal super tiny speakeasy. So I asked for an Old fashioned, because I figured it would be a bit less expensive. My mistake for not asking, but I was surprised to see the Old Fashioned charged the same price as the other artisan cocktails : 20€ To me, this whole ordeal felt like: hey come to this little cool room and “feel special” but we charge you premium prices to be in here. 20€ for a old fashioned just feels exploitative. I recommend you to charge normal prices for classic cocktails in this room, because you aren’t making the experience in there any more special. The only thing that feels special is the way into the room. Everything else in there is underwhelming. I hate feeling exploited, and this was the feeling I was left with. I had been waiting to write this review because I wanted to do justice to how amazing this place is. We came for some great cocktails from the number 1 bar in the world (@50bestbars) but what we got was far beyond delicious drinks. Paradiso is a fully immersive experience, from the moment you enter the secret door you feel welcomed from all the staff. The lighting is sensual and the vibe is relaxed yet swanky. The cocktails are so much more than drinks, this is truly art, each item is an experience that brings you to a time in history (or the future) and it engages all of your senses. You can choose your cocktail based on the spirits you enjoy, the tasting notes or the story it comes with, we had 3 cocktails each and every one blew us away! We shared the “on fire!” (2person experience) then I had the Tesla and the cloud, my boyfriend had the copper and the immersion. I tried them all and it’s hard to pick a favorite but I’d say the Tesla and the cloud were exceptional to taste touch and experience! I don’t want to ruin one moment of your experience so I encourage you to show up with an appetite, as all of your senses will be fed. Speaking of- the food is excellent! We could have eaten a pastrami board each, and the melted cheese delicious! I am still blown away thinking about this evening at Paradiso and the magical ambiance. This is a must go if you are in Barcelona! I wish I could give it 10 stars!

Now some tips for getting in- they are the number 1 bar in the world and the queue works a little differently. They have a digital queue with a QR code but once that is full, there is a physical line to wait in until the digital queue opens again. Best bet is to get there right before they open (not too early as they don’t want to disturb their neighbors) if you are in the beginning of that line you can just walk inside. If you are on the digital queue expect a 70-90 minute wait after scanning the QR code. So...
