LATERAL Strachan — Restaurant in Málaga

Went here for breakfast after walking around and having a hard time deciding where to eat. The waitresses took a long time to take my order and I had to head to the bar to speak one only to be told to sit back down and wait a minute.

I saw in the menu that there was a croissant with brie and ham. So when i was finally asked for my order, I asked if it was possible to substitute the ham with smoked salmon (since there was an omelette with salmon OR ham in the menu) and the waitress nodded. I also ordered iced coffee (but was told they only had coffee with ice. Okay.)

They first served the coffee. Instead of just giving me the coffee in a glass with ice, they gave me the hot coffee in a cup and gave me a separate glass with ice. Fine.

Then came my “order”. I was served an avocado toast. Which i did not order. Nor did i mention the word avocado anywhere in the conversation. I told the waitress (who wasnt the one who took my order) that I didnt order avocado.

The waitress who took my order then came to my table and insisted that it was my order. I told her i do not eat avocado and i reiterated what i actually told her (croissant with brie and salmon i stead of ham). Then she said that was not possible. With nary an apologetic tone in her voice. I ended up ordering the omelette with smoked salmon.

Afterwards she spoke to a customer in spanish and with the little spanish that i know, i knew they were talking about me.

Needless to say, it was a bad decision to come here. Wasted one...

Maybe it’s because we walked in on New Year’s Day with no reservation, maybe the staff on hand were all grumpy with a hang over on the day after. Maybe we just didn’t know our order quick enough. Whatever it was, Lateral leaves much to be desired. The prices are quite high for the amount food you get. It’s become a running joke in my family to ask for regular water and not exotic sparking water from a volcano anywhere we go.

The place is nicely decorated, but the bathroom is a mess and reflects poorly. The waitress was snippy with my mother on techicallitjes of shrimp types and forgot to bring us an extra glass for the magma water, and seemed to be avoiding us the whole time after we ordered.

Personally I enjoyed my quesadilla, but it wasn’t anything to write home about. The plating of the croquettas are quite lovely! while the food is good, I think it’s the service that...

I am visiting Malaga from the US and stopped by Lateral yesterday. The food was amazing. I had the Iberico and Gruyère pinxcho which was almost a meal itself! I also ordered the Mamma Mia burger which was excellent. It had a marinated sun/dried tomato on top which was a delicious surprise. The French fries were fried to perfection. My waitress, Lorena, was wonderful. She was extremely patient while I practiced my high school Spanish! When I was done with my meal, she told me that the bartender was creating specially crafted drinks. I chose a watermelon mojito which was too delicious. I would have had a few more if my afternoon didn’t call for a clear head. I recommend Lateral wholeheartedly. Try to get one of Lorena’s tables. I’ll...
