I write this with a heavy heart as I do feel uncomfortable leaving negative feedback. However, this is the only means of communicating my poor experience. As a holidaymaker, I try to converse in Spanish to respect the local culture. I was able to place my order in Spanish to a level where I was confident that I had been understood. I had received a Spanish menu which I was able to understand. However, it is important to note that one can only interpret a dish to order based on the content that is displayed on the menu. The dishes that I was due to consume included the chicken bao bun and the Korean-style patatas bravas. The menu detailed that the bao bun was due to come with mayonnaise. I have a strong intolerance to mayonnaise, so I asked for this to come without and this was understood. However, there was nothing to detail anywhere that the Korean-style patatas bravas would be due to come with mayonnaise. As before, if this had been detailed I either wouldn’t have ordered it or would have asked for it without. One could argue that traditional bravas come with a mayonnaise sauce but this would not be fair to expect the consumer to apply an element of guessing to the dish. I was most disappointed when the Korean-style bravas came swimming in mayonnaise. This disappointment was reflected in the quantity of food sent back. Further to this, and what has upset me most, was the chicken that was sent as part of the bao bun. I was pleased that there was no mayonnaise on this. However, when I went to eat the disappointingly poor portion of chicken, I found that it was not cooked. The first red flag was the speed at which this was served from the kitchen - this was the first of a series of dishes to arrive. When I went to eat it, the bao bun itself was warm, but the chicken was cold. It was slimy, tacky and generally unpleasant. I had already recognised that the choice of cut was chicken thigh. I am well versed in the difference between breast and thigh meat, and that their textures and appearances are different. I had been put off by the dishes so much that I had already decided that I wished to leave. Throughout the duration of my sitting, no one had come to ask about my experience. I was only able to raise the issue at the point of the server removing the dishes. I acknowledge that I do not have adequate Spanish to communicate the nature of the experience in the way that I have here, but the response from the server was simply not appropriate. He was adamant that my experience with the chicken was due to it being thigh meat. He said ‘it may not be good chicken for you but it is good chicken.’ This response implies that it was a matter of opinion for if the chicken was cooked as opposed to my very genuine experience. At this point, I was so dissatisfied that I simply wished to leave. When the bill was brought, there was no offer of removing the dishes which had received poor feedback. I would have thought this was the very minimum that could have been done. All that was offered was the removal of the bread that had been brought, which was stale and had not been asked for in the first place. This situation could have been entirely different if more time had been spent on customer requirements and attention to detail. It is regrettable that I had to pay in full for all dishes when the quality was less than acceptable. Should a refund in retrospect be offered, this would be...
Read moreThe restaurant has a good location and a very nice design. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. The food was average, and the cook unfortunately was not able to prepare a well-done steak. instead I got it barely medium rare. before I even started eating, the waiter was surprised that I asked him for a fork, which he had taken away moments earlier, and the wait for the food was very long, even though there were not many people in the restaurant. When I saw that the steak was done poorly, I asked for a well-done steak. The waiter took the dish, but had a very unpleasant attitude and during the entire dinner he behaved as if he was working for as a punishment (waiter with long hair tied in a bun). When they kindly brought me a new steak after a long time, it was too burnt, and the dish itself seemed to be deliberately over-salted, along with the additions. We finally ate the food because we were tired after a whole day of sightseeing and we didn't want to wait another 30 minutes for the food to be improved. We reported this to the waitress who gave us the bill and she acted very professionally and politely. I hope they will improve because the example of this waitress shows that there are good employees there and the design is very good. I give 2 stars for the decor and for encouragement, because maybe they will improve. However, until this happens, I advise you...
Read moreWe stumbled across Perro Viejo on a Sunday evening. It looked like it might be a hideously expensive restaurant with a waiting list to get in, but we were pleasantly surprised to be able to walk in and enjoy extremely affordable tapas.
The venue is an amazing renovation, tastefully executed with respect to the building's heritage. Dining is distributed across floors, with a central atrium hosting the bar at its foot.
Unlike many Málaga restaurants, the menu isn't huge. Perro Viejo obviously prefers quality over quantity. We chose to dine here because there were some interesting veggie options (for the one who doesn't do meat or fish).
Service was very friendly and fluent English was spoken. We had spot-on recommendations for the wine and suggestions on how some dishes could be made veggie (I got to enjoy a bowl of shrimps that would otherwise have gone in a salad). It's always a good sign that things are prepared to order.
The dishes were packed with flavour. We stuck with tapas portions, which were ample. I highly recommend the Korean potatoes and the Jap-Mex chicken gyozas, but, honestly, everything was moreish.
Cheesecake rounded us off (one portion, two spoons) and we ended up battling over the last mouthful.
So, five tapas dishes, a dessert and five glasses of wine set us back 55€. We're definitely going...
