El Buey Restaurant — Restaurant in Madrid

(Please note: My review of this place is not based off of their cuisine as I did not even give this place the opportunity of me dining here.) I have often heard of the discriminatory way of which Americans are treated when traveling through Europe. While we had experienced quite a bit while in Spain, none had been so blatent as what we faced at El Buey. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a sour faced waiter that stared us up and down. We asked for a table for 5 and he acted as if pushing 2 tables together was a burden in a space that was nearly empty. He then asked us what we wanted to drink. When I asked what kind of beers they had, he told me they only have one type of beer. As I waited to translate for my friends, he bent over and told me "this is a place for family dinners, not a place for just drinking." When he walked away, I translated to my friends what he had said and we immediately felt uncomfortable. I asked for the bill and we decided to leave. The waiter asked if anything was wrong and I explained to him that his attitude towards us was unwarranted and made us feel uncomfortable. He told me that he didn't meant to offend and that he hopes we come back soon. Trust...

Aunque la comida es de calidad, hemos comido mi familia y yo en muchas ocasiones en los restaurantes de el buey. El sábado perdió varios clientes, ya que el trato fue del todo inapropiado. Fuimos a cenar y cuando quisimos pedir la carne nos insistieron hasta en cuatro ocasiones en que teniamos que pedir más de medio kilo de carne para según él no pasar hambre. Cuando cada una de las 5personas que fuimos a comer tenia escogido su plato y tan solo tres comian carne. Con excusas como que la carne era toda grasa y eso pesaba. Al final nos trajeron 600gramos y fueron más que suficientes y ¡grasa no tenian por ningún lado! No nos ofrecieron de beber y tuvimos que buscar al camarero, uno de los comensales cambió de opinión y pidió que le sirvieran también vino y el camarero le echó en cara que le había dicho que no cuando preguntó la primera vez, y para terminar la velada trataron de cobrarnos 7€ por unos paquetes de mantequilla y varios que habían puesto en la mesa en mesa en un inicio sin preguntar y que siguieron ahí hasta que terminamos de cenar ¡nuevos!. Cuando pedimos una explicación, el camarero nos dijo: ¿lo dicen para que se los quitemos de la cuenta? Eso se avisa al principio.(no entiendo como vamos a poder avisar hasta que no vemos 7€de más) AL final nos quitó 2,50€ por la mantequilla y el resto lo cobró con la excusa de que habíamos cogido un bollo de pan mientras gritaba a otro camarero: ¡A esta mesa no les sirvas licores! (No los queríamos, pero sentimos ese grito como un ataque por no pagar la cuenta sin pedir explicaciones). Sencillamente vergonzoso y sin duda mucha falta de profesionalidad. Me consta que en las de más direcciones del buey el trato es 10 veces mejor. Por lo que no pienso pisar de nuevo este establecimiento. Wow What a Steak! Not mich Choice on the menu but I understand why! Small menu great food! Absolutely loved it. Steak is cooked on the table in front of you. Waiters could try a bit harder to smile but of course it’s Spain. So nothing to complain about. Recommend to everyone. But be careful… they put the meat on the grill with the bone and so charge you for the bone + meat. We had around 1000 grams of steak but they charged us for 2 kilos.
