We arrived in Seville quite late, and rushed to get here before they closed. Our first waiter was great, and the food was good. Things went from good to bad, after our original waiter disappeared.
Our new waiter clearly wanted us to leave. Pushing hard to clear everything off the table, sometimes before things were finished. Finally we ordered the bill.
When I gave him my card he decided (without asking) that I should pay in dollars. If you travel to Europe regularly, you know this is an absolute ripoff. I asked for the transaction to be cancelled, and resubmitted in Euros, the manager came over and told us he did not know how to do this. I was with a native Spanish speaker, who tried to understand how someone who runs a restaurant does not know how to cancel a credit card transaction. Finally we came to a compromise, where the restaurant paid me back the difference in Euros.
Incredibly, the staff and manager, then started insulting the native Spanish speaker in the group for actually helping to broker a compromise. It's clear that the staff don't particularly like serving people, and might be better suited for another line of work, like cashier at a supermarket, where they would definitely learn how to cancel a transaction.
As I mentioned above, the food is good. If you get the right waiter, the experience is good. I can assure you, if you get the wrong waiter, the best food in the world (which this is not) won't make up for how you...
Read moreI had a bit of a mixed experience at Bodeguita Romero and part of the negative unfortunately felt a little bit like a tactic to take advantage of succesptible tourists who didn't speak Spanish which made the experience less enjoyable. So I will start with the fact that there was great service and delicious food, especially the pringa and pork cheeks which we came for. However our waiter recommended a 'popular dish' which apparently was highly recommend it turned out to be some form of tuna at 9,50/100g and I usually go with recommendations, it was not mentioned that it was fish, but it was quite tasty. I had anticipated a small plate to try instead we discovered on the bill an amount for close to 27 euro for this taste. This nearly doubled the total of the bill. I initially put it down to miscommunication, and blamed my self for the error until I realized how many of the itentical dishes were going to other tables. When I explained the situation to the manager they promptly refunded all but 9.50 euro. Obviously I don't know if we were given 100g or 250g or there was a genuine error, but something about the situation was just fishy. Other than this hiccup the experience was great. So I recommend to go,but to ask lots of information about what you are ordering and commit to mass quantities on dishes...
Read moreA bit intimidating for non-local non-Spanish speakers but absolutely worth the challenge!! Just be patient and don't expect any special treatment. If this is not your cup of tea, then go elsewhere. You have been warned.
No reservations, so be prepared to queue. They take your name and then you just have to stand outside and wait. We waited 45 minutes on a Saturday at 15:00. There is a system even if a little chaotic. Its popularity with all the locals tells you all you need to know. This is not a tourist friendly place and they make no effort in that regard. Little or no English or any other language spoken!!! Not even a menu in English.
But having said all that, if you are prepared for the hassle, the whole experience once you are seated is just such a cultural culinary treat. The food and the buzz are such fun to enjoy with everyone else. Hence the popularity. Yes the service is chaotic and the dishes you order come out in a fairly random order, but they are all delicious and wonderfully authentic. The two tireless waitresses did everything they could to look after us.
I disagree with other reviews. This place is certainly great value for money and not expensive.
Highly recommended but not for the...
