La Chunga Tapas, Desayunos y Brunch — Restaurant in Seville

Note: Review from a few months ago - but it didn't post correctly, so reposting it now.

To me, the food was absolutely top class - but the why the 4?

We were charged €3 euros for 2 small pieces of baguette that we didn't even ask for. This is a thing in Seville generally, but €1.50 each is very expensive, it's usually between 50 cents and one euro, and in the other restaurants we explained we didn't ask for it, and they just took it off.

The waitress spoke perfect English, and was quite friendly, though her demeanor totally changed when we didn't tip (due to the bread charge). She also referred to us as "guys", which, when there as a male and female couple, is a bit annoying.

Atmosphere 4 - the atmosphere looked awesome in the front of the restaurant, but we were seated in the back as the front was totally full. There was no toilet roll in the bathrooms.

The owner/host seemed very friendly, and asked us how the food was etc, and I think if we had have only been served by him, and seated in the front, with no bread charge, then it would be 5s...

I had a terrible experience here and the waitstaff were slow and rude. I made the mistake of ordering two dishes on the menu, the eggplant and the provolone, that were just a heaping pile of melting cheese--a total disgusting mess. Unless you absolutely love melted cheese as a meal. The menu didn't indicate that the eggplant would be smothered in disgusting melted cheese, nor did it indicate that the provolone would come in a cast iron pot all melted. The description just said provolone with pesto, so I assumed it would be a tapas style cheese with some bread and pesto. But no, it was just globs of disgusting melted cheese. The drinks were also mediocre. I would change the name of this place to "LaCrappa". Service was inattentive, nobody spoke a word of English, and even with my limited Spanish, the waiters didn't make any effort to explain anything. And the food was worse. I left this place sick...

Habitualmente cuando un sitio se pone de moda, baja en estándares de calidad y trato con el cliente. En La Chunga, copando los altos puestos de una clasificación ficticia en la gastronomía sevillana desde hace ya bastante tiempo, podría pasar, pero no pasa, más bien todo lo contrario.

Sin duda, el tiempo de espera para poder ir a comer podría mejorar. Creo recordar que he ido más veces por allí de las que realmente he comido, bastantes más. Es sencillo, está siempre a rebosar, el local no es muy grande y a veces querer comer allí se convierte en un acto de pura paciencia y fe en el santo Job. Creo recordar que no hacen reservas salvo momentos especiales como comidas de Navidad y cosas así, aunque no sé si habrán cambiado este criterio. Si quieres comer allí debes ir bien tempranito, y si vas con un grupito más o menos grande, te recomiendo que te tomes una cerveza en un bar cercano y esperes una horita antes de pasarte por allí.

Tras este breve palito. Toca alabar las virtudes de La Chunga, que son muchas. En primer lugar, y no más importante, destaco su estilo, su sello. Tiene una decoración fantástica, muy Chunga, con mensajes personalizados y objetos muy chulos. También, por supuesto, el trato de los camareros, camareras, cocineros, cocineras y todo bicho viviente que te cruces por allí, son unos auténticos cracks. Unos figuras de cómo se debe tratar al cliente. Mi máxima admiración. Desprenden un rollo muy fresco, sin llegar a ser demasiado cercano. Por último, la cocina. ¡Qué maravilla! Soy consciente de que un local bien cuidado y con buen servicio puede funcionar e incluso triunfar con una cocina modesta, al igual que un restaurante con buena cocina y un servicio malo y rancio, también puede funcionar. El caso es que en La Chunga, además del buen servicio, la ubicación (junto al Puente de Triana y el nuevo mercado la Lonja del Barranco) y la decoración, tienen una cocina sobresaliente. Su carta es menuda, con no demasiado donde elegir pero todo de una calidad bastante interesante. Siempre recomiendan el risotto, muy cremoso, el wok o el cremoso de patatas y la chapapizza. Da igual. Te pidas lo que te pidas, te va a encantar. Una cocina llena de sabores, texturas, colores y olores.

El precio. Bueno, no está mal. Al principio puede que te parezca algo caro, pero te aseguro que cuando termines de comer, te resultará barato. Las tapas son bastante grandes y la...
