First point, it's not a submarine restaurant. After you've visited the Oceanographic with long tunnels underneath the fishes you'd expect something similar. Instead the dining room is next to the aquarium, not below it. So technically not "sub" marine, as you have no water above you.
Second point, 95% of the fishes in the aquarium are of the same (relatively boring) type: a simple grey fish. Two small sharks and a few elasmobranchii. No colorful or tropical fishes. One single aquarium with little variety and fishes turning around you.
The atmosphere remains indeed nice but definitely below expectations and below the potential of the Oceanographic.
There are three lines of tables. Ask for the one directly by the aquarium when you reserve. The second line is okish, in third line you don’t see much.
Service isn’t great either. For instance, I was offered a choice of three different breads: whole, normal, with seeds. I picked the last one and then that option wasn’t available for my partner and they couldn’t find more. Also, I was offered the help of a sommelier to choose a white wines. The “sommelier” is the same guy who’s in charge or taking the orders to all the tables. So in the end I chose the wine myself, otherwise I’d still be there waiting. I’m actually still awaiting a bottle of water I ordered 😂
Importantly, differently from what is indicated in the carte/menu, for the dinner service they don’t have the “Mediterranean Menu” or other menus. There’s only a more pricy ‘menu degustazione’. Without menus they earn more for sure, but it would be fair to write it down clearly
But let’s come to food. The options are rather limited, it is often a sign of quality. But we didn’t find the one we expected. Starters were small, gourmet-style, but rather nice. Particularly the “Leek confit log, with Smoked Pyrenean Trout” was more an appetiser than a starter. The disappointment was the grilled skewered hake (Merluza de pincho) with quinoa and vegetables. Fish was tasteless and quinoa was more a decoration than a side. A special ‘mayonesa del mar’ was probably meant to give flavour to the dish, it was ok but not able to save the course. Also one of the dessert was disappointing, avoid the passion fruit cream caramel. They call it a ‘tocinillo de cielo’ but that’s very down on earth. The four cheese cake is instead recommended, despite the tasteless scramble it is served with.
Overall a little disappointing experience with a restaurant that tries to look like a gourmet restaurant but is not up...
Read moreWish we'd seen the other reviews before going. The building, just as the others in the ciudad de las artes y las ciencias, is architecturally beautiful. The interior is equally as impressive - dominated by an enormous jellyfish-like light and a fish tank that runs the entire circumference of the circular restaurant. There is no a la carte menu and, in the evening which was when we went, there isn't even a choice of set menu. In general the food was good, but the seven course tasting menu did range from a sublime filet steak to an inedible cauliflower mousse. If the food had come with a waiting service that had even a modicum of civility I would have been a satisfied customer. Instead, as others have found, children or foreigners or possibly foreign children aren't welcome. The waitress made no attempt to say anything welcoming, didn't smile once and never asked if we were satisfied. And once my youngest caused a spillage, each and every subsequent course was accompanied with a contemptuous comment about where the plates were being placed on the table. It became laughable. Bizarrely, they also made me sign their receipt after the chip and pin Visa had all gone through successfully. They had already given back my card so weren't verifying the card was mine. All I can think is there was some point being made that they didn't believe we could afford the meal (it was expensive enough to warrant good service, but not so much so that the average person couldn't afford it). And before you think any of this was down to our behaviour, I think we're actually rather agreeable people (didn't even complain to the manager) and my kids were being uncharacteristically well behaved too. The service has tainted what would have been a very pleasant evening - maybe you'll be lucky and there are better waiting staff working there or perhaps they'll be more hospitable if you don't have children but, unfortunately, I just can't recommend...
Read moreIt has good food and portion is also alright, but service really terrible. We went for lunch today as a group of 4 adults plus 1 child. We entered the restaurant right after entering the Aquarium, hoping to have some lunch and get on visiting the animals. Since the lunch menu looked nice and there really is not much else to choose from, we decided to get the menu for 4 of us, it was a BIG MISTAKE!! the service was soooo slow one wouldn’t believe it! It took 15 minutes just to get our drinks ordered and served, it took another 15min to get our food ordered, another 20min for the 1st starter, another 20min for the 2nd starter, another 30min for the mains to come…..we sat down at 2pm and did not even get our dessert by 3:50pm! Note that we have only until 6pm to visit the whole Aquarium and we wasted 2 full hours in this restaurant! after paying a big entrance fee to the Aquarium! Our waiter seems to have his interested always somewhere else, serving the neighbouring Spanish customers really fast, 1 dish after another, and paid no attention to our needs as we are only speaking English apparently! He is in no rush to get the dessert ordered and collect the bill. We got so restless and especially my 3 year old! All she wanted was to get out and see some other animals. So at the end we got out of this restaurant at 4:05pm and has merely 2 hours to visit the Aquarium, I could say, IT ruined our experience!!!! We had to rush through everything and it was really a pity!! Because the Aquarium has lots of really amazing animals and we only wished we had 1 hour more! I recommend not to go there for lunch if you don’t have time! And I still could not say we were impressed by the service or the attitude of our waiter, NOT...
