Sushi is commonly connected to raw fish of all sorts. But vegan options have been prominent occurrences for a while now. Who can say no to some nice avocado, cucumber and deep fried tofu skin? Trying out sushi places is always a gamble though, so let’s see how NK Sushi Takame right in the centre of Gothenburg holds up.
NK Sushi Takame is situated right at, well, NK, so pretty central, but still kinda out of the picture and easy to miss. I’ve certainly walked past it numerous times, or rather, haven’t walked past it at all as it’s not located at a street that is typically used when you know where to go to. Still, when entering the decor is simple and alright, but nothing special. More interestingly is the eerie atmosphere that greets you. There is no music, no ambiance, nothing. You just hear the munching of other guests and the people working there. You know that uncomfortable feeling when everything is quiet and you need to cough? Yeah, kinda like that.
Anyways, the menu is your typical Sushi menu with some defined sets, a selection of different pieces and the - in Sweden typically - found Poké Bowls. I always find it suspicious to find that in a Sushi place, as it has nothing to do with each other, but hey, Swedes love their Poké Bowls and often can’t tell the origin of their food. So, might as well have it on the menu.
I opted for a mix of 15 pieces, vegan. Shortly after ordering they arrived and I was quite positively surprised. A mix of high quality pieces, Avocado, finely sliced Mango, tofu, an odd choice of just cucumber, and some Maki rolls with tofu skin. All done to a high quality, fresh and served with some pickled onion (such a Swedish thing), Soybeans and Wakame.
All in all, quite nice and I felt happy to have had such a diverse selection of vegan sushi. Especially the tofu is often messy and drenched in fat, but here it was perfectly fried tofu skin and the maki rolls even had crispy tofu skin in them. Very nice!
The only thing that still kept disturbing me, however, was the silence that the place surrounds. It really needs some sort of music, atmosphere and a better feeling to feel welcome. This way it felt a bit more like “eat your food and get out”, which is fine, but for a price point of 175 SEK for 15 pieces of vegan sushi I would like a better feeling than a canteen.
Getting good Sushi is always a gamble in Sweden. Most places are below average and shady, and when it comes to vegan options, they are even worse. NK Sushi Takame surprises with a good selection of vegan pieces, crispy tofu, avocado, finely sliced mango and the sorts are a diverse selection and to a high quality. The price is rather high for vegetables however, as well as the atmosphere a bit too eerie for my taste. Come on, just put on some music and make it feel less like a prison canteen. Still, it’s a good place for some...
Read moreNK Sushi was fantastic. The sushi plates were designed with great pride and detail. The freshness and flavors of the food was rewarding to the appetite. And the service was prompt and pleasant. I would happily return to this lovely little restaurant that seems to be quite popular but maintains a humble persona with its modern and...
Read moreThe place was renovated recently and menu has changed. Fewer menu options now. Place seems elevated, prices increased, less dishes, and taste is not as good as it used to be. I think the cooks have changed. Used to be one of my favorite sushi places, not anymore. I don't think I...
