It’s a rare but happy occasion that I happen to pass by the strömmingvagn in Gamla Stan (formerly Slussen, before they dug it up) not only during trading hours but when I need some lunch.
I ordered pan fried herring on rye - two fat fillets of perfectly cooked herring and a ton of sweet mustard on a slice of really nice bread, topped with lightly pickled cucumber and red onions. It was impeccable. Basically flawless. I almost laughed at how completely delicious it was whilst eating it. It was 60kr, which is apparently £4.77 in English.
I almost laughed cause it was lunchtime and I was sat there on my own, thinking that if this was a guy with a beard and some nice tattoos (rather than a gubbe who has been around forever), with a social media manager, maybe a bit freer and easier with the microherbs or, god forbid, foams, there’d be a twenty minute queue here and it’d be twice the price. Nobody else visited whilst I ate.
So yeah, newsflash, the nystekt strömming guy is really good. He’s still...
Read moreI was excited to try this place. But I’d say it was just ok. Between the fried herring and all the side accoutrement options, I enjoyed the mashed potatoes the most. Not sure if it’s because we missed the lunch rush, but our herring was not fresh off the griddle.
If you’re a tourist and you’ve been told to try fried herring in Sweden, I think you could get a much better plate at other restaurants in a cozier setting. But if you’re in a rush and this is a convenient bite, go for it. Also hard to beat the location and nice view of Södermalm.
Also not a bad option if you’re looking for a more affordable meal as those are quite hard to come by in Stockholm. It’s a nice change from the typical hotdog grill kiosks and bad...
Read moreSeriously good. I’m a Portlander (Oregon, USA), so we know all about how tasty the food at unassuming stationary food carts can be, and this was no exception. I was a bit hesitant to try herring but was convinced because the pieces are fried so how bad could it be? The 80 kr platter is a delight (and a deal for this town) and everything balances well together; I could have eaten an entire plate of the pickles alone. From the appearance, this place doesn’t look like much, but the food is delicious and nicely presented for a cart. There are a few public benches and tables around, but no overhang to protect from the elements. Unless you absolutely loathe fish, go ahead a try it. You’ll be more than...
