I never write negative reviews, but I feel I have an ethical obligation to speak about my experience at Restaurant Laterne. I am white and from the US, but I'm writing this review to echo and support the many other people who have written reviews of this restaurant talking about the racist treatment they experienced here. I have witnessed this. Please don't patronize this restaurant.
We came to try some roschti after a day at the lake and sat on the patio. I was appalled to see the way that different parties were treated while we were there. The server seemed very kind and friendly to the two German-speaking tables, bringing out what seemed like complimentary bread with their meals. The server was short with us, not outright rude, but not very kind--it also seemed like they were maybe joking with another table about us, but I'm unsure as I don't speak German. But I was dismayed to see the way in which the server treated a party of folks that came in after us. They seemed to be from South Asia and spoke English. The server was extremely rude to them. When they arrived at the restaurant they had a stroller with them. They asked the server about a high chair and the server just stared at them for several seconds, not saying anything and looking at the stroller. Finally the person volunteered that they were planning on folding and stashing the stroller in the corner, to which the server said "Good." The party asked several questions about the menu--they were vegetarians who wanted traditional Swiss food and wanted to make sure they understood the menu correctly. Each time they asked a question, the server would respond rudely or bark at them "just read the menu." It was horrifying to watch. The wildest thing to see was the way in which different folks were treated: the German-speaking folks with such friendliness, us with coldness, and this table with such palpable disdain. When we left and looked up reviews of this place that evening, I wasn't surprised to see SO MANY reviews from Indian/South Asian folks talking about the racist treatment they received here. I am so disappointed that we patronized a restaurant with such a pattern of treating...
Read moreTerrible experience last night at this restaurant I was going to eat here because it was recommended to me by someone. It’s not on the Main Street of the town and was a fifteen minute walk away from our hotel. The place was quite empty and dull I and my cousin chose to sit outside on the verandah since it was so stuffy indoors. The server looked quite cross with the world in general. Didn’t crack a smile which is very contrary to the Swiss people we had encountered.
There was no meat fondue so we ordered a cheese fondue. After expecting it to be divine, we were terribly disappointed that it wasn’t even average. The bread was hard and stale and tasted simply rotten. The Rosti we ordered had ham and since we couldn’t see what were eating we realised this after I got a piece of meat in my mouth. When I brought it to the attention of the server she just grabbed it from the table and walked off saying you ordered it your mistake. The least I expected from her was a replacement but she was in a great hurry to even remove the fondue from our table. She was so nasty and rude and belligerent..... completely spoilt the wonderful day we had spent in Interlaken. The way the service was done, it seemed like she was not at all happy to serve us. She just banged the plates on the table and walked off. I told her we would be writing a review of the restaurant and that it wouldn’t be pretty... she just laughed out loud in my face and continued laughing like it was some silly joke.. She went on to humiliate us by discussing the incident with the other local diners. Reeked of a racist attitude!! After the experience I had last night I would try recommend anyone to ever...
Read moreTruly unprofessional in regards to dealing with foreign COVID-19 vaccination certificates.
We've been seated without checking or asking for our certificates and we even orderedour food then suddenly because they notice the police were dining in they request our vacination certificates, we showed them the certificates which has been already accepted in every resturant, hotel, airport and country that we visited but they could not recognize it and they didn't know how to deal with it. Then we were asked to leave and we left the restaurant with a hungry 2 years old child that we didn't know where to feed after wasting too much time and it's already late to find another open restaurant!!!
Outside I met the gentlemen from the police and asked them about if our certificates are accepted and they assured me that it's accepted anywhere in Switzerland and they offered me to go back with me to the restaurant, I thanked them but I will never back to this restaurant again.
Bottom line is if you have your vaccine certificate from outside Switzerland it would be better for you to avoid this restaurant, although the gentlement from the police assured me that they will let them know how to handle forign vaccine certificates but I cannot recommend this restaurant with this...
