Let's talk about the positive, there is a small fridge for all that stay there to store their cold food. They have a small microwave, small toaster and many dishes. The free breakfast consists of white bread, butter and an assortment of jam, plain oatmeal, corn flakes(or non branded equivalent), tea, instant coffee, and orange juice. The location is not bad, it's about a 15 minute hike from the main train station or you can take a tram in about 8 minutes of combined walking and riding. Many shops places to eat and drink, and attractions are within a few (less than 10) blocks. With that said I believe this place is way over priced for what it is. The room (32) was very cramped with 6 beds. There is barely enough room for 2 people to be moving around at the same time. There is a huge fire and shock hazard with the beds. They are metal framed beds with electrical extension cords and power strips zip tied to them. I don't know if the Swiss have heard of chafing cords but when one of them goes it probably won't be pretty in such an old building or for the poor person that grabs a live bed. I also noticed a lot of extension cords being used as permanent wiring in the bar downstairs. In the US the National electric code forbids this because of the fire hazard. If you stay on a weekend expect not to sleep prior to 2 am when the bar downstairs closes. Loud techno music, people screaming ect... can be heard up at least 3 floors until that time. No laundry on site, overcrowded room, not able to sleep in a place you paid for sleep = to me anyway not worth $50+/night/person. I would not stay here again on a weekend and would not recommend this place...
Read morePros This a very friendly, chilled out hostel with a cosy pub downstairs. it's clean and the bathrooms are spacious with shampoo and shower gel. It's really close to the train station and the waterfront too and lots of bars and restaurants. After hours you have to check in through the pub which can be a bit chaotic if it's busy and only one person is working. Zurich is an expensive place so take advantage of the free breakfast in the morning. You can also get a small beer downstairs for 4 francs between 4 and 10pm and there's small chocolates at the reception. Also the guy who owns the hostel looks like Jeff Goldblum.
Cons My first night I arrived around midnight and my key did not work so it took about 20 minutes before I could get into my room. The rooms can also get a bit smelly if the window is not open, but if the window is open you hear all the noise from the...
Read moreBeds / rooms were good, tons of outlets were in the room, some in the lockers too for charging your phone if you want to keep it locked up overnight or whatever. Locks for lockers and towels were provided. Sink and mirror in the room. Shared showers were filthy. Tons of hair clogged the drain so you were standing in 4 cm deep water while you showered. 2 showers with only a thing curtain so we just used the showers one at a time and locked the bathroom. Breakfast was okay, hard boiled eggs, fresh bread, turkey and cheese, some yogurt cups (they rain out by 8:30) and cornflakes. Coffee and tea were also available. Free lockers to store stuff if you arrived earlier than check in. Wifi was strong and reliable. Service...
