Yakitori Bar — Restaurant in Zhongshan District

Great Yakitori restaurant that uses binchotan charcoal. The aroma and taste of skewers cooked over charcoal is distinctive and a level up from places that use gas or electricity. Every chicken skewer was cooked to perfection, meat still tender and juicy and not over seasoned. You get a choice of salt, sauce or yuzu seasoning for the skewers. I ordered 80g of the grilled outside skirt for variety but it was disappointing. The beef isn't cooked Yakitori style on a skewer. While edible, it's nothing special and I'd rather spend the money on 3 chicken skewers for that price. The cabbage salad is a nice palate cleanser, fresh, crunchy and tossed with a light ponzu style dressing and topped with shaved parmesan (so simple but very unique and creative IMO).

Highlight skewer for me were the wings. I'm a huge chicken wing fan and these were excellent. So good that I myself had 4 skewers.

These yakitori are the most similar to the Japanese ones that I could find so far in Taipei. The quality is high, no doubt: and every dish was in its way delicious. With that said, there are some very unpleasant details: first, you're supposed to serve mayo with the karaage, I don't know why you missed this. It's not supposed to be Taiwanese fried chicken. Second, it's ridiculous that with the price you pay for one of these skewers, you can only order two at once (then put the price for two, not for one only: a bit of a scam feeling, this one); moreover, and even more ridicolous, the "sauce" you choose to put on top must be the same. Are you really that greedy?...

A spontaneous craving for yakitori and we call just 10 mins ahead and was able to get seats, in fact plenty of seats. However after we arrived it got very busy the longer we stayed on a Monday night. So that gives you a sense how good this place is, but not overwhelmingly hard to book. As for food is what we came for and we were not disappointed, all their recommended dishes were delicious. That chicken liver is something else tho, highly recommended. Service were friendly and attentive even when it gets busy. I found a new favorite...
