Africana's BBQ — Restaurant in Unguja

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant in Zanzibar and I couldn't be more pleased with my experience. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The food: I must admit, I was a little hesitant to try African cuisine at first, but I was immediately won over by the delicious flavours and bold spices. The menu was extensive, with a wide variety of dishes to choose from. I opted for a variety of meals over the day, the best one was the goat, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of rice.

The service: Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable, always checking in to make sure we were happy with our meal and offering recommendations for dishes we might enjoy.

The real star of the restaurant is the tireless and dedicated young woman chef who works in extreme conditions and at night in the dark to provide clients with delicious meals! Take a moment, if you are dining at night to go see her, and if you are satisfied with the meal, pay her compliments. It’s going to make her smile. She prepares the meals at night with a flashlight. It’s extremely upsetting to know that the manager decided not to install a working light in the kitchen. Working in these conditions and at night in the dark is no easy feat, and it takes a special kind of person to be able to handle these challenges with grace and determination.

In short, if you're looking for a truly authentic and memorable dining experience in Paje - Zanzibar, this African BBQ restaurant is a must-visit! The food is delicious, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service is top-notch. I can't wait to go back and try more of the delicious dishes...

I do not recommend… kindly if you really need to visit this place do so with a local guide otherwise you will be conned . I went here with my guy evening times no lights in there and it is for a reason as they use this tactic to con you of your change once you pay your bill. We didn’t have change for 2k so we gave them an extra 10k on our bill expecting change she went away with the cash expecting us to forget but when I asked she lied that we gave her 2k instead of 10 and be rest assured that when she came she had backup lies to go with it . The TZ 2k and 10k look alike in terms of color so she came holding the cash we gave her but she swiped one 10k with a 2k so we couldn’t prove that we gave out what we claimed I was so annoyed with the dishonesty I just walked again swearing never to come back . Ensure to count with them the money you give them otherwise...

Not a safe place for tourists or families.

I visited this place based on a ChatGPT recommendation, expecting a local food experience. To my surprise, this was not a typical restaurant it felt more like a pub or bar, with a very unsafe atmosphere for foreign tourists and families.

There was a disturbing scene of an intoxicated Asian woman in the arms of three young Masai men, which immediately raised red flags. The entire place smelled heavily of toxic substances and marijuana.

We decided to pay and leave without eating. This is not a place I would recommend to anyone seeking a safe, clean, and respectful dining...
