Went to Kanomjeen Sanpakoi because of Mark Wiens’ video. The first time I went I ordered the #1 and I am ashamed to say I couldn’t even finish it. It was delicious but it was the spiciest food I have ever eaten. I had added dried chilis before I even tasted the broth too btw- big mistake. I went back again two days later and ordered a #2 and #3. They were both absolutely delicious. Went back a third time a couple days later and got a #5 and #6, thinking I would have then tried everything on the menu…I realized I had forgotten #4. I was too full at this point and leaving Chiang Mai the next day. I wish I would have tried everything. The bowls are cheap except for the Khao Soi which is also cheap just not AS cheap 5555. Needless to say I am a BIG fan of Kanomjeen Sanpakoi. Next year I will go back and make another attempt at the #1 and make sure to try the #4-completing the menu. The ladies were sweet and helpful as was the other staff. The market the restaurant is located in also has other delicious stuff like Mango Sticky Rice for after your delicious Kanom Jeen. There was also a french toast type thing with TONS of whipped cream that saved my life after I ate the spicy #1. Overall I would highly recommend Kanomjeen Sanpakoi to anyone. Pro tips- I had prepared to order in Thai as I tried everywhere, but the ordering just goes by number, and pointing works too. Average price of the bowls was 30THB so don’t be afraid to try a couple at once. I can’t...
Read moreKanom Jeen Sanapakoi is place for authentic northern Thai style noodle, Kanom Jeen refer to fermented rice noodle and eating with different type of Thai curry. The famous northern Thai curry is Nam Ngiao, tomato and chilis paste based curry. It's came with minced pork, pork bone and pork blood jelly in the curry. They cook one of the best Nam Ngiao in the Chiang Mai, Strong and rich in flavors, you can feel the heat from the chili. The taste is very strong of tangy from tomato and spiciness kick in at the end. It's very aromatic curry and taste of northern Thai spice. The pork also stew in curry for several made it very tasty. Signature of Nam Ngiao is eating with pork blood jelly, really a must try. They also offer plenty of soup but recommend for Thai green curry, the thick and creamy Thai green curry. It also wonderful flavor from curry paste with huge of topping inside. Kanom Jeen Sanpakoi is considering one of the best street food and worth Michelin guide award, price is amazingly cheap comparing to large portion of serving. This place is really worth visiting...
Read moreThe Nam Ngiao lives up to all the hype. A beautiful harmonious medley of spicy, salty, sour, and balance of ingredients. I piled in heaps of chile and was ready to rock. Truly a magnificent soup that is deserving of the Michelin recognition. I could eat bowl after bowl after bowl of this stuff.
After Nam Ngiao, I doubled up with a bowl of Khao Soi, as I've been searching for the best Khao Soi in Chiang Mai. I ordered it with beef. The flavors of the broth had a nice balance and rich sweetness, but even after squeezing in a half a lime, there seemed to be something missing. It wasn't as potent and flavorful as I hoped it would be. The biggest disappointment was the beef. Tough, chewy, and grisly. Simply unacceptable for a place of this caliber, which costs it a star. I suspect chicken would have been the better choice. So while the Khao Soi was nice, it won't make the cut.
The Nam Ngiao is the star of this show. I recommend chicken if you go the Khao Soi route. Either way, this is a necessary stop for any...
