As a frequent visitor to Bangkok who has explored many of the city’s standout rooftop bars and sky lounges — particularly around the Sukhumvit area — I had modest expectations when visiting the rooftop bar at Lamaya Bangkok, largely because I was a guest at the Staybridge Suites. Unfortunately, even those expectations weren’t met.
The experience was underwhelming from the start. In the short walk from the reception to the bar entrance, the minimum spend per person increased — without explanation. That sort of inconsistency set the tone for the evening.
The view from the rooftop is anything but impressive — especially when compared to Bangkok’s countless sky bars with stunning panoramic vistas. To make up for the uninspiring skyline, the bar attempts to create a “wow” factor with a lackluster fire show that feels more like a distraction than genuine entertainment.
Service didn’t help: staff seemed unfamiliar with their own menu, unable to answer simple questions, and generally untrained. Add to this a mediocre DJ playing music far too loud for the size of the outdoor space — to the point that holding a conversation with friends or family became nearly impossible.
The drink offerings are equally unimpressive. There is exactly one beer option, and the cocktail menu — though priced at a premium — delivers very little in terms of quality or creativity. Giving a simple Aperol Spritz a fancier name doesn’t suddenly make it a premium cocktail — especially when it tastes just as ordinary as anywhere else. For those prices, I’d expect far more in terms of taste, execution, and overall concept.
What makes the whole experience even more puzzling is the context: the Staybridge Suites is not a five-star or high-end hotel. It positions itself more in the upper-midrange segment, so it’s unclear why the rooftop bar aspires to such inflated standards — and fails so completely to meet them.
Frankly, many five-star hotel rooftops along the Sukhumvit strip offer a superior experience at a lower price point — with better views, a wider selection, no minimum spend, and far more professional service.
In short: expectations and reality never align at Lamaya’s rooftop bar. What’s pitched as a premium experience turns out to be an overpriced, underdelivered night out. I wouldn’t return — even as a...

Read moreAbsolutely ridiculous and blatantly discriminatory. My friend was denied entry because of her open-toed shoes, yet men were freely walking around in tank tops. Either this establishment enforces a sexist double standard where women’s footwear is policed while men can dress as they please, or—worse—it was racially motivated, as my friend is a woman of color. Meanwhile, sneakers were deemed acceptable.
To make matters worse, I had already ordered two drinks—one for myself and one for my friend—before they refused to let her in. I’m extremely lightweight when it comes to alcohol, yet after downing both drinks, I felt completely fine. That tells you everything you need to know about how weak their cocktails are.
Clearly, all the money that should have gone into decent drinks and fair policies instead went into hiring 20 bodyguards to protect a tacky, try-hard bar. If you enjoy overpriced, watered-down drinks and arbitrary, borderline discriminatory rules, this is the place for you. Otherwise, spend your money somewhere that actually...
