We chose this place for our last dinner in BKK, and we definitely made the correct choice. All dishes were authentic original Thai food with minimal fusion or modern twist, but it was just so good. Ingredients were fresh, and were using herbs which I had not seen in other Thai restaurants.
✿ Appetizer platter Five traditional and local appetizers from different regions of Thailand - Khao soi (Northern Thai noodle in curry), Miang kham bua luang (traditional thai snacks - lotus petals wraps with sugar sauce, nuts, lime, shallots, and roasted coconut flakes), fish cakes with Thai basils, Gai haw bai toey (deep fried chicken wrapped in pandan leaves), rice cracker with curry-ish toppings. This small portion of khao soi was one of the best I had, and the miang kham bua luang is forever my favourite!
✿ Larb Muang Moo (Northern Thai style pork salad) This was by far the best larb I had with so many different kind of fresh herbs like dill and roselle leafs.. totally in love with roselle leaf which I had for the first time in my life which was giving nice slight bitterness and nice flavour that just complimented each bite.
✿ Massam curry with ox tongue I actually booked this place for this dish because it's so rare to have Massam curry with ox tongue, and though it was not as wow as I thought, it did not disappoint - very tender and the taste just went really well with the curry.
✿ Fried seabass with tamarind sauce? (menu said trio sauce) I usually don't enjoy this crispy fried Thai fish dish (never had any that I fancy), but it turned out to be another best for me. It was so crispy, not oily, and the well balanced sweet, spicy and sour sauce was just went really well with the fried fish.
This place was really a great place to know how good Thai dishes can be. I would love to come back and try all the other dishes as well as there were really many more that I wanted to try.
Staff were very attentative and kind. When I was trying to figure out what herbs I am eating, they took the time to explained to us. Also, they were looking at our wine glass very carefully and poured before the glass was...
Read moreI am a returning guest. The Local is a Thai restaurant popular among foreigner and locals. The dining ambience features traditional and colonial Thai house, very freshing, glamorous and cozy. Food is yummy and service is good and thoughtful. A good place to invite friends visiting to thailand, business occasions or casual gathering.
Minor suggestion: it seems now they have package (1699b, different from set menu) sale that up to 3 persons and the other for up to 2 persons. The deal looks good but you need to book specifically first. But restautant may need to make the information more aligned on site and online to customers.
The issue is, when I made the booking on the phone, I was never advised of above package deals and when I arrived in restautant, I was not given the special menu. When I found that and curious about it (special menu was on other table and I heard staff explaining it to some Thai customer), I was asked did I book this menu and I said no with surprise. Actually one staff with Thai traditional dress nodded and said yes we could, but another staff with apron looked not happy, said quickly with poker face insisting we cannot enjoy package deal. In order not to create any discord, we ended up ordering ala carte. It is definitely ok to follow the rules technically, but I feel it could have been dealt with in a better way. Please educate your staff avoid negative expression like if I owe them money. The service level in the Local, in my memory, can be more flexible than this.
From the perspective of a guest, when you do not give customer the same menu without explaining anything, it may have already create impression of different treatment.
Later overall the service is still speedy, responsive and up to expectation, but on this specific incident about package menu, I do feel a bit disappointed. I suggest restaurant promoted more online or tell customer when booking, in any event making it more aligned, and can show more gesture of hospitality and flexibility.
Plus the phone number on google map seems not updated. Please consider updating your info on website...
Read moreMy partner and I recently dined at The Local on Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok, and it turned out to be a regrettable decision. Despite its reputation for authentic Thai cuisine and charming traditional decor, our experience was nothing short of disastrous.
We each ordered different curry dishes, as The Local is known for its variety of Thai curries. However, within hours of our meal, both of us began feeling extremely bloated and uncomfortable. The next two days were miserable - we couldn't stop burping, each time tasting the lingering curry flavor. We were essentially confined to our hotel room, dealing with upset stomachs and general illness.
What's particularly concerning is that The Local has received positive reviews and even earned a place in the Michelin Guide. This makes our experience all the more alarming and raises serious questions about their food handling practices.
While the restaurant boasts an extensive menu of over 100 dishes and an appealing ambiance, the severe aftermath of dining here far outweighs any positives. The fact that both of us experienced the same symptoms suggests this wasn't an isolated incident.
I strongly advise potential diners to reconsider visiting The Local. No amount of charm or claims of authenticity can compensate for days of illness and discomfort. There are plenty of other Thai restaurants in Bangkok that offer delicious food without the risk of falling ill. Save yourself the trouble and your health - avoid this...
