Now I usually avoid restaurants touting fusion take on traditional dish, let alone recommend.
I am making an exception for Hor Fun.
Hor fun is a chinese dish make with flat rice noodle. It is a simple dish usually cooked in thicken broth with seafood, meat, vegetables and with some eggs mixed into the dish. It can also be stir-fried (the “dry” version) and comes with beef or any other ingredients - my favorite fried beef hor fun is one example.
Hor Fun (the shop) has a different take on hor fun (the dish). They offer a “dry” version with different menu items, each showcasing a different main ingredient - Trout, scallops, wagyu beef, beef tongue (!) lobster etc. They also offer other dishes like claypot rice and other sides.
I order the Trout hor fun. It comes with a trout fillet that is nicely done - crispy on the skin and juicy on the inside. The hor fun is lightly sauced and comes with generous serving of bean sprouts, shallots, dried shrimp etc, and a trio of condiments - cane sugar, black sauce, chilli flakes. Depending on your preference, you mix these into the dish, and toss everything up.
I must say it is a wonderful mix of traditional and modern take on a simple dish. Very subtle and nicely done. Not a huge size that overwhelm your tummy. Remember, one is in Yaowarat - there are a few more shops to eat, so one must ration the precious tummy space.
Oh, and the shop deco is also a reflection of their dish. Such a nice oasis in the middle of a madhouse of chinatown. Cool place with smooooth jazz playing in the playground while you slurp on hor fun. And nice drinks too.
If you are looking for something nice and different from the usual loud and messy chinese restaurants with oily food and dimsum, this is one good place to be.
I will be back to try another item.
Note : this place doesnt...
Read moreAmazing is not a word I’d use often, but it would be wrong of me not to use it to describe both the food and staff at this absolute gem of a restaurant. Had this on my “Want to go” list for a while and finally made it. My only regret is why did I leave it so long? We arrived on a relatively quiet afternoon which to be fair, allowed us to see some of the great artwork and detail in here which otherwise may have been missed. The food was first class and was served by dedicated, friendly and attentive staff. The whole place had a feel of love being poured into the food then complimented by the service. Bookings are taken for the tables on the second floor but we were fortunate to be seated on the ground floor with no booking having been made in advance. Recommended? Oh yes, absolutely. This is an experience not to be missed. Very well done to...
Read moreFANTASTIC!!! this is a MUST visit spot in Bangkok. The chef is amazing! We came to this place at the recommendation of a friend who lives and Bangkok, and let me tell you, absolutely, I could eat here everyday if I had more time in Bangkok. The food was a perfect medley of Thai, Chinese and Western cuisine. It is no surprise as the Chef is a formally trained former culinary competitor (not as in TV). He’s created a menu that speaks to all the senses . The food was as visually appetizing as it was full bodied in flavor. My only regret is not having had enough time left to my trip, as I would have loved to have tried everything in the menu. I can see this place easily become the next hottest place to eat in Bangkok. It was wonderful that the Chef came out to say hello as we were the last customers in. I will be back each time when...
