Overview Located just a short walk from Jok Sam Yan and Samyan Mitrtown, Chula 50 Kitchen enjoys a well-deserved reputation among locals and visitors alike for its affordable yet flavorful offerings. With over 1,300 reviews and a 4.1-star rating on Google, it’s particularly famous for its crab curry omelet, which combines simplicity with satisfaction. A casual yet popular spot, it draws both students and food enthusiasts seeking a good meal at a reasonable price.
Food & Menu Highlights The Rice with Stir-fried Crab Curry (70 THB) is the standout dish at Chula 50 Kitchen. It’s not only a treat for the taste buds but also visually appealing, with a creamy, slightly runny omelet beautifully absorbing the sweet and flavorful curry sauce. The curry is mild, sweet, and exceptionally balanced, complementing the fresh, sweet crab meat without overpowering it. The generous portions of crab make the dish feel hearty and satisfying.
For those with a bigger appetite or dining with friends, the Stir-fried Crab Curry (A la carte) (120 THB) is an excellent option. Served without rice, this dish allows diners to sample other items from the menu, making it perfect for sharing.
In addition to these crab-centric dishes, the Crab Fried Rice (70 THB) is another favorite. While the curry is not spicy, it can be adjusted to personal taste with the addition of sliced chili in soy sauce, which adds heat and complexity.
The menu is available in both Thai and English. Once seated, diners are handed an order sheet to choose their dishes, which are quickly prepared and brought to the table.
Ambiance & Service Chula 50 Kitchen has become a popular destination, especially among Chulalongkorn University students and tourists, with many international visitors, particularly from China. Expect queues during peak hours, especially from midday to evening. However, the restaurant has a two-seating area layout, providing additional space for customers.
I visited around 4 PM, just before the area starts to buzz, and was fortunate to find a seat immediately, despite the restaurant’s reputation for long queues. The casual, relaxed atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for a quick, satisfying meal. Service is efficient and friendly, with staff promptly handing out menus and order sheets. Dishes are prepared quickly and served without delay, ensuring a fast and no-fuss dining experience.
Verdict Chula 50 Kitchen strikes a perfect balance between flavor, value, and atmosphere. The crab curry is sweet, creamy, and well-balanced, offering generous portions of fresh crab at an affordable price. The restaurant’s popularity, particularly among students and international visitors, speaks volumes about its appeal. If you're in the Samyan area and can catch a time without a long queue, it’s definitely worth a visit for a satisfying and visually pleasing meal.
In summary, Chula 50 Kitchen delivers a solid, tasty experience that’s well worth a visit, especially when the queue...
Read moreI prepared myself for a long queue, knowing it would take some time, so I waited patiently for my turn. What shocked me the most, however, was the experience after being seated. Once the staff took our orders, the nightmare began.
They brought our food in a very odd manner. First, we received our desserts, then we waited an hour for the first main dish. I thought my husband's dish would come soon after, since we ordered the same thing, but no! We had to wait another 30 minutes to an hour for his dish. Then, we ordered a side dish, which took yet another 30 minutes to an hour. By the time everything arrived, I had lost all patience, as I prefer my food hot, and the delays made it impossible to enjoy it as intended.
To make matters worse, we had to follow up several times to get our drinks. If you happen to choke in the middle of your meal, don’t expect any help—your drinks are nowhere to be found. When I asked the staff for an update on my order, the waiter gave me a side-eye as if to say, "Hello, you need to wait. Don’t stress me out." It was frustrating!
Despite the poor service, the food itself was nice. However, the experience left a bad taste because the long wait meant the food wasn’t hot by the time it arrived. Still, I’m willing to give it another try, perhaps it was just an honest mistake. If I ever go back to Bangkok, I would consider visiting 1 last time again to clear their image on my thought.

Read more14 Jun 2025, Saturday, 2.20pm to 2.55 pm waiting time. Long Queue. After being seated, another period of waiting. I think I will only get my food after 1 hour from the time I get a number. Come on weekdays! I am ordering Fish Maw Soup with Crab Meat 120 baht, Jumbo Fried Rice with Crab Meat 380 baht and water 10 baht. Food is only 3 stars today. Fish Maw Soup with Crab Meat is too salty and has less ingredients than yesterday. Jumbo Fried Rice with Crab Meat is very wet today, not nice, like it is being cooked by an apprentice. I will not visit again after the inconsistent food quality on both visits. 3 stars for today's food.
13 Jun 2025, Friday, 9.30am There's menu and order form in English & Thai. I ordered the Fish Maw Soup with Crab Meat 120 baht. It is slightly sour, very nice, not too salty. I also ordered the Crab in Curry and Omelet 380 baht. Unfortunately, I only ate the crab, the curry isn't to my liking, I left it untouched. I later ordered the Jumbo Fried Rice with Crab Meat Fried Rice 380 baht, asking for less rice but they don't understand English so I still get a big plate that's double the size of usual small Thai serving. The Crab Meat Fried Rice is sooooo much better than the curry dish! Skip the curry crab that's hard and messy to eat. Just this fried rice dish is enough. Thai tea 35 baht is nice but too sweet unless you wait for all ice to melt. Overall, it's a great meal, worth 5...
