The Experience Nestled along the historic Charoenkrung Road, just a 15-minute stroll from Asiatique The Riverfront, Kimpo Fish Porridge is a culinary institution in Bangkok. With over 70 years of history, this family-run restaurant has elevated the humble Khao Tom Pla (ข้าวต้มปลา) into a masterful dish that epitomizes the intersection of comfort and indulgence, earning a devoted following from locals and tourists alike.

Upon entering, the vibrant atmosphere is undeniable. Even after 8 PM, a long queue snakes outside, a testament to the restaurant's enduring popularity. Despite the 30-minute wait, the staff's graciousness and the thoughtful gesture of complimentary green tea set a warm, inviting tone for the meal ahead.

The Dish The Mixed Sea Bass with Shrimp and Squid Porridge (200 baht) arrived steaming hot, a symphony of textures and flavors. The sea bass, expertly poached, was buttery and delicate, exuding a natural umami that celebrated its impeccable freshness. Succulent prawns and tender squid added depth to the dish, each piece cooked to perfection.

Adding an unexpected yet delightful touch were the small dried shrimps hidden within the porridge, lending an aromatic, briny undertone that subtly enriched the broth. The clear, delicately seasoned soup base served as the perfect canvas, enhancing the seafood's natural flavors while maintaining a light and refined profile.

A highlight of the meal was the accompanying spicy dipping sauce. Vibrant and fiery, it struck the perfect balance of heat, tang, and saltiness, complementing the porridge's delicate flavors without overwhelming them. Each bite was a harmonious blend of freshness and complexity, showcasing the restaurant's mastery in crafting seafood dishes.

Beyond Porridge The restaurant’s menu is a treasure trove for seafood lovers, offering a range of options to suit every budget. From the classic Sea Bass Porridge (100 baht) to indulgent specialties like Red Grouper or Grey Pomfret Porridge (400–500 baht), there’s something for everyone.

For a change of pace, diners can explore the Hoi Tod (Seafood Crispy Pancake), starting at just 80 baht. This rendition allows guests to customize their pancake with mussels, shrimp, squid, or mixed seafood, offering a delightful twist on the traditional Thai street food classic.

A Legacy of Excellence Kimpo Fish Porridge’s legacy is enshrined in its Michelin Guide recognition from 2017 to 2023—a nod to its unwavering dedication to quality and tradition. The restaurant’s story began with a humble stall established by its Singaporean founder on Charoenkrung Road. Over the decades, the next generation expanded the menu while preserving the meticulous preparation and commitment to freshness that defines Kimpo today.

Signature dishes like the Red Grouper Rice Soup, prized for its firm, flavorful skin, and the Grey Pomfret Rice Soup, with its mild, tender fillets, reflect the culinary finesse that has cemented Kimpo’s status as a Bangkok icon.

Verdict Kimpo Fish Porridge is more than a dining destination; it’s a heartfelt journey into the essence of Thai comfort food. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning regular, its rich history, masterful seafood dishes, and welcoming atmosphere make it a must-visit gem in Bangkok's...

KHAO TOM PLA KIMPO | BANGKOK 🐟🍚🥣

On the Michelin guide for 5 years and counting, Khao Tom Pla Kimpo (ข้าวต้มปลา กิมโป้) is a famous fish porridge dinner/supper place that has long been a legend since World War 2.

It has now been over 70 years ago! Located in Charoen Krung and legendary for hanging huge whole fishes in front of the eatery!

The seafood fish soup porridge is a must orderz The restaurant uses really fresh head grouper fish and the meat is succulent, thick and really has a bite. The soup was an umami bomb with squid, prawns, fish stomach and pork pieces! Superbly delish and comforting!

The fried oyster omelette (love the tau geys!) is highly recommended. Comes with the breath of the wok and crispy on the outside. The oysters were small but plump and juicy.

Service was attentive and space was hygienic and pleasant. Tip, go about 5:30 pm if you want to avoid the long dinner time queue!

A must visit when in Bangkok! . . . Khao Tom Pla Kimpo (opposite Chatrium Hotel) 1897 Soi Charoen Krung 73 Charoen Krung Road | Wat Phraya Krai Bang Kho Laem | 10120 Bangkok Daily Business Hours: 6pm...

I had the opportunity to eat dinner at this eatery just across the block from my residence. It's a divine experience, and the cuisine is excellent, with all of the ingredients being fresh and of high quality for the price. I suddenly looked up at the wall. They received a Michelin recommendation for many years. Without a sure, everything they prepare here is wonderful and amazing. If you prefer eating boiled rice with sea bass and other types of fish. You must add this to your list as soon as possible. Last but not least, the restaurant has no air conditioning, so you would like to be prepared to feel a little hot, and Thailand weather here is rather horrible...
