El Ali Restaurant & Cafe — Restaurant in Tunis

The setting is an old house in downtown Tunis, with a restaurant on the first floor and a café on the rooftop. Not easy to find in the middle of narrow streets with crafts shops however everyone around would happily indicate the way. The menu features traditional dishes from different regions, mostly with fish and meat. Vegetarian mains available are gratin, rice or couscous with veggies. Prices for a main ranged between TND 20-35 on average. Overall, I wasn’t impressed by the food taste and presentation. This is not an upscale restaurant, especially from a service and cleanliness perspective. In regards to the service, we sat at the end corner where no waiter could see us nor could we see any, so I had to get up and find them each time. We only had the amuse-bouche (bread with dips) when we asked the waiter, as a table that arrived after we did got served. And last, I asked for the dessert menu and it never arrived so I went after a moment and got the check. In respect of cleanliness, I was disappointed with the cleanliness of the tablecloth (with glasses upside down when we arrived), the bread basket which had pieces from leftovers cut and served to other customers, and the restrooms (dark and with no toilet paper). Alors, on a hésité longtemps avant de choisir et après on s'est dit El Ali à la Médina. On est parti tard j'avoue (vers 15h). Une fois au restaurant, on a posé la question au monsieur (le gérant apparemment): la cuisine est toujours fonctionnelle? On peut rester déjeuner? Il a dit "oui oui allez y" (sèchement déjà et il était trop pris par ses comptes qu'on a attendu un moment pour avoir cette réponse et rentrer) Une jeune demoiselle nous a ramené le menu (après notre demande puisqu'on attendait une autre personne). Une fois là, on a choisi quelques plats. En notant notre commande, le monsieur l'a appelée pour lui annoncer que les plats choisis n'étaient plus disponibles, c'est assez gênant que tu te trouves obligée de choisir un truc que tu ne voulais pas à la base! Ce que je n'ai pas apprécié en plus c'est qu'on ne nous a pas avertis dès le début, on ne nous a pas dit que certains plats manquaient au menu et après c'était à nous de voir qu'on reste ou non. Je me suis énervée puisque je n'aime pas qu'on m'impose un choix particulier. Pour l'entrée, on voulait un assortiment d'entrées ordinaire et c'est ce qu'on a commandé d'ailleurs, mais on était servis celui aux fruits de mer! Quand on a posé la question, à ma surprise on nous a annoncés qu'il y en avait plus du coup on nous a mis ça à la place: alors on te change ton plat sans te consulter avant ou avoir ton avis. Pour les "amuses-bouche" soi-disant, on était trois et il y avait que 2 assiettes avec une cuillerée peut-être de salades, le plat plus gros que la quantité franchement décevant. Sinon pour les plats on a pris (par élimination et non pas par volonté): tajine merguez, felfel mehchi et ejja merguez, c'était succulent, quantité généreuse et top niveau goût pour être honnête. On n'a pas pu finir le tout et on a pris le felfel mehchi à emporter. La demoiselle qui nous a servie était serviable et très aimable ( malgré que je me suis énervée un peu mais elle a su gérer). À la fin le gérant est venu s'expliquer (et non pas s'excuser) mais pour moi personnellement c'était déjà trop tard, fallait le faire dès le début! Certes la nourriture est succulente et le service est correct mais je ne reviendrai pas à ce restaurant car je trouve qu'on m'a trompée quand on m'a invitée à m'installer et on ne m'a pas avertie que je n'allais pas trouver tous les plats du menu, qu'on n'est pas venu s'expliquer et s'excuser dès le début. Beautiful, quirky and traditional restaurant in the heart of Medina. The Cafe is on the top floor and the restaurant on the 1st floor. Food was delicious, fresh and traditional. Their seafood is highly recommended, whether it's with pasta, risotto or couscous. The shared salad/antipasti platters are great . We had to wait upstairs for 20mins for a table to become available but it wasn't too bad because time flew as we chatted. Would have loved to have coffee but we ran put of time. Will definitely recommend for any meal. The only downside was that the toilets did not have any soap or toilet paper!
