Dar Bach Hamba absorbed the prayers of the nuns and the hymns of Christmas, imbued with the spirit of the Virgin Mary. Statues depicting Mary and Jesus were placed at its center, along with paintings showcasing the myths of Christian beliefs. In the year 2000, the Cultural Institute in Sicily embraced the house as a Mediterranean cultural center, recognizing its historical significance and enduring religious tolerance. Its rooms hosted permanent exhibitions of ceramics and garments originating from the Maghreb and the Mediterranean basin. The house became a meeting place for the cultures of Mediterranean peoples. When I visited the house as a follower of the exhibitions I had read about, I saw its collections. However, upon arrival, we were welcomed by a group of young Tunisians working at Dar Leil Nahar, who had adopted it as a home for their association, El Charaâ Fan (“Street Art”). They organize interactive cultural projects with the city’s residents, including exhibitions, festivals, and events that detach the space from the past of their ancestors—ensuring they do not forget their city in the face of the overwhelming force of modernity.
