Smoky Kebap & Steak Restaurant — Restaurant in Göreme

My wife was craving for steak so we decided to try Smoky BBQ Restaurant. To our pleasant surprise, the place is beautifully situated overlooking Göreme's sights and as it turned evening, the street lights made everything look magnificent.

Smoky BBQ has indoor as well as outdoor seating, which was what we chose. The breeze added to the pleasant ambience of the restaurant, and mellow songs played at the background (which was momentarily turned off during the call for prayer, which though a small act, indicated due respect shown by the owner of the establishment).

Speaking of the owner, Mr Ali and his staff were friendly, attentive and professional, always ready to serve. No food review worth its salt (heh) would be complete without an actual description of the dining experience, and I am happy to say we thoroughly enjoyed our meal from appetizer to dessert! The steak and testi kebab we had were fragrant and flavorful, and the chocolate souffle was very rich and unique in taste. At the end of it all, I enjoyed the shisha to wind down the night.

We had the pleasure of dining in at Smoky BBQ Restaurant on our last night in Cappadocia, after having been out site seeing for over 8-10 hours during the day. Needless to say we had worked up an appetite. The entrance to this restaurant is a little unassuming as it is located up a flight of stairs, however the view while dining is well worth it, especially if you are able to dine on the terrace. Our waiter, Ismet, served us with smile and attentiveness throughout our entire dining experience. As for the food, well worth the prices, especially for some good sirloin steak. We ordered two different sirloin steaks, one well done and one medium well, and both came exactly as ordered. We ordered an Ali Nazik which was tasty also. While dining we also got to try some of the Mezze/Dips as entrees which all added to the experience. We were really craving a good steak and were excited to try this restaurant, especially seeing its impressive 4.9 rating on google Unfortunately, our experience didn’t quite live up to the expectations.

To start, no water was offered when we were seated—which felt a bit off for a restaurant of this caliber.

The steak presentation was nice, and the mushroom sauce tasted great. However, we were surprised to find that the only side option was chips—no mashed potatoes or vegetables, which are usually standard choices with steak.

The most disappointing part was the steak itself. Despite the flavor, the texture was incredibly tough—like chewing rubber. My partner couldn’t even finish a quarter of his portion and had to spit most of it out because it was so difficult to swallow.

Really unfortunate, as we were looking forward to a great meal. Hopefully, this was just an off night and improvements...
