I recently visited Maiz Tacos and tried two of their vegetarian/vegan options – the La Tierra tacos and the Sweet Potato & Black Bean quesadillas – and overall, I had a really enjoyable experience.
The La Tierra tacos were the first dish I tried, and they stood out immediately for their creative flavor profile. The combination of roasted cauliflower with cashews created a beautiful depth – earthy, nutty, and slightly smoky, which made each bite feel unique. They were light yet filling, which I appreciated. The only thing I felt was missing was a touch of added moisture – maybe a drizzle of salsa or a creamy sauce – as the tacos leaned slightly on the dry side. A little extra balance in texture would elevate them from “great” to “exceptional.”
The Sweet Potato & Black Bean quesadillas were another highlight. Perfectly cooked, they were warm, gooey, and comforting, with the black beans giving a hearty richness and the sweet potato bringing just the right amount of sweetness. I found them more balanced and satisfying than the tacos. The only drawback was the garlic-heavy dip served on the side. While garlic enthusiasts may love it, for me the sharpness was a bit overwhelming and distracted from the delicate balance of the quesadillas.
What really makes Maiz Tacos worth recommending is their focus on fresh, quality ingredients and their willingness to bring creativity into vegetarian and vegan dishes – something many places overlook. I would love to see more plant-based options added to the menu, along with a greater variety of dips that cater to different palates.
On the service side, things could be improved slightly – while the staff was friendly, the attentiveness and overall pace could use a little polishing to match the high quality of the food.
Overall, Maiz Tacos is a great spot for anyone who enjoys flavorful, thoughtful food with a creative twist, and I’ll definitely...
Read moreI was really excited to try Maiz seeing they were in Dar Al Wasl and successfully relocated to JLT, and I became a fan of tacos after living in NYC for 6 weeks.
We ordered the corn, guacamole and chips, El Jefe and Beans Quesadilla. The corn was delicious and grilled well. The chips was one of the best I had and the guacamole wasn’t mushy but rather chunky, which is exactly how I like it.
The El Jefe’s beef was good but not any better than your local Mexican takeout (no need to name it). The bread was very disappointing and broke the dish for me, it was easily breakable and didn’t taste right to me. Perhaps the gluten-free recipe isn’t working for Maiz because it’s nothing like real soft shell tacos. The toppings weren’t great either - a tad bit of guacamole and onions. They might have wanted to highlight the 6-hour slow cooked beef however the beef isn’t that great to begin with.
The beans quesadilla was (dare I say) better than the tacos and this is coming from someone who loves all meats and rarely orders vegetarian. I would have liked cheese and sour cream to complement it.
The restaurant has a decent interior although the lighting at night was uncomfortable. The speakers are of low quality so music sounded annoying. None of the chairs have back rest so you’d want to eat quickly and leave. Service is friendly although awkward at times. The place isn’t ventilated well and we walked out with our clothes, hair and skin smelling like we were cooking in the kitchen.
I’m still looking for exceptional tacos in Dubai just how I had it in NYC and so the search will continue. For now, you can try this with mid...
Read moreComing from the west coast of North America, I know a good taco - and in general, Californian-style Mexican food. As an avid fan of Baja fish tacos, guacamole, elotes (grilled Mexican street corn), and chipotle…Maiz Tacos was a must try.
If I’m honest, my first brush with Maiz Tacos was about 3 years ago at the Sole DXB event. I had tried their tacos and was not so impressed. But my husband said we should give it another try this time around and I concurred, because I believe in supporting neighborhood eateries. I’m so glad we went!
We ordered: LA GRINGA, LE JEFE, LA TIERRA, CARNE ASADA QUESADILLAS, and MAIZ GUACAMOLE with chips.
LA GRINGA is the closest thing I’ll get to my favourite Baja fish tacos so I’m taking it!!! Devoured this in seconds. Love the Maiz Guacamole as well — must order! My husband’s Carne Asada Quesadillas came with a chipotle sour cream dip (you can choose that or cilantro sour cream), everything was supremely satisfying.
However I was not too impressed with LE JEFE or LA TIERRA. Will pass next time.
Overall, customer service was top notch. Everyone was friendly, warm and inviting. The interior design is eye catching, and they have a wheel chair or stroller access on the very right side of the building if you need it.
Will definitely be back — waiting on a dessert menu, or did I miss that?🥹
P.S. bonus, they give...
