Overall, a great place for the food I miss from home. We had a starter of guac and chips - the guac needs more seasoning, definitely garlic, but nice. It is steep at £7.50 because, even though avocados are expensive, they only give you a handful of chips for an appetizer meant to be shared. We ran out of chips before the guac was gone. For my main, I had the tacos al pastor which were divine - charred tender bits of pork with grilled pineapple on blue and white (or yellow, it was dark) corn tortillas with a side of (black bean) refried beans. My friends had the steak queso fundido and chorizo roja quesadilla, which they really enjoyed. To drink, the frozen margaritas are gorgeous. Oh, and we shared an order of churros (comes with 4) for dessert. They absolutely beat Acapulco’s, light and crispy, cinnamony, and a velvety caramel dipping sauce.
The service after initial ordering was a bit slow, but it was a full house so I guess that’s to be expected. Be prepared to spend here (they take card). Everything is obviously made with quality ingredients, ample amounts of it in the case of the margaritas (strong), and handmade in the case of the tortillas (which I know is tedious), so it’s not that it’s overpriced - it likely reflects their costs - just that it adds up very, very quickly. Locals, be aware proper Mexican tacos are 1) soft 2) small so don’t be expecting Taco Bell. I felt I could have gone for a second round, but with my tacos, 2 tumbler sized margaritas, side of refried beans, plus my portion of the starter and 1 churro, I was already looking at £30.
I would love to see the addition of homemade tamales on the menu eventually! Look forward working my way through the rest of the current menu.
UPDATE: editing after most recent visit. Had the tacos al pastor again and very disappointed. The quality was such an extreme reduction from the previous visit - swimming in grease with very fatty and over cooked pork. I’m hoping it was just an off night because the first time was so enjoyable, rather than the result of cutting costs or caring less about providing a quality experience. I’d hate to lose the sole source of proper Mexican...
Read moreLa Taqueria is a group of taco restaurants in Belfast. Their food and service is of a very high standard. We came here as we have seen such good reviews of their vegan options. We started with the Guacamole sharing platter for two which was super fresh and crisp. Both the Nachos and the Guac is homemade and makes all the difference to taking this dish next level. For our Tacos we had the Coliflor Capeado, which is a Cauliflower based taco. I thought this my favourite of the two we had selected. The cauliflower was super crunchy and delicious. The sauce and mayo made the whole thing very flavourful. We also tried the Mushroom Birria, this was also very nice but I would not recommend this dish if you don't like vegan cheese. I personally don't and therefore asked for it removed, I think another alternative could used. Similar to our cauliflower taco as the sauce and frying process is what added its uniqueness. The mushroom soup for dipping was wonderful, so overall very satisfying dish. On the side we got the Papitas Fritas which were extremely crunchy, well seasoned with a wonderful creamy sauce. Overall I could easily recommend this for vegans and non vegans alike. The portion size and the cost are all well balanced, can't wait...
Read moreAbsolutely gutted tonight by the meal here. Had friends up from Kilkenny and raved about the Quesos Fundidos, calling it my favourite dish in Belfast. Table at 6pm and on looking at the menu, that dish has gone from the restaurant but not the online menu. The girl suggested I try ormeau road restaurant for that (bit late) and shrugged her shoulders, and that's us back to the drawing board in terms of order. I was so annoyed by the omission of the dish and the attitude I let the others order for me. The food came and was tasty enough to be honest, £11 guacamole should be tasty, but the lingering disappointment didn't leave and the food all came out together so turned into a buffet at the table. I'm Mr food pic and couldn't even bring myself to take one. At the end, £90 bill had a 10% service charge already added for 4, the only thing the menu didn't lie about. Despite decent food tonight's experience for our Southern friends was poor, we ate the food, but menu basic, food expensive, service brutal, couldn't recommend to anyone following that, and as per my history, rarely give bad reviews to anywhere, and had planned to go back in two weeks.... Will see if IV an old el paso...
