Jumon is a plant-based Asian fusion restaurant located in the centre of Belfast, and I can safely say this is one of the best plant-based restaurant experiences I’ve had in Belfast. We ordered everything from small plates to desserts. Everything we ordered had a great combination of flavours and spice which everyone in our party really enjoyed, whether they were vegan or not! I want to mention some of the stand out plates: Starting with the smalls, the simple but amazing KFB (Korean fried brocolli) is just wonderfully crunchy and deliciously seasoned with some miso mayo, slices of ginger and a serving of kimchi. Definitely try this out when you are here! The KKP (kkanpoong Crispy Tofu) had a fantastic marinade with some crispy Tofu that was deliciously soft inside. Once again, this was paired with miso mayo and a poppadom which is unconventional but works really well. For the 'bigs' we had the Jumon Dandan which was just silky and delicious with a proper kick. This is the spiciest option on the menu but it is well worth it. The flavour of the oil based sauce and the rich flavour of the mushrooms and crunch of the bok choi worked really well. We also had the Hungley which was a sort of satay sauce but with an Indian twist. It was paired with ramen noodles and some pineapple, basil and peanuts which just tasted delicious! For desserts we tried the Dark Moon and Full Moon, both of which were delicious. The Dark Moon was a satisfying chocolate experience with silky sauce, delicious brownie and some fresh raspberry ice cream. The Full Moon tastes like a fancy loop da loop ice cream and the flavour combination is delicious. There is crunchy chocolate, fresh lime sorbet delivered with a beautiful finish. Also the service was excellent. We were served by Reid who did an amazing job, leaving us asking for nothing, always checking for whether we need more drinks and being good craic whilst he did it. Overall I think this is a no-brainer, if you are in Belfast try Jumon out. I know I will scrambling back here as...
Read moreA very confusing place. I really want to like it, but I can't.
We've been three times - once in the Portstewart pop-up and twice in Belfast.
The first time, in Portstewart, was decent. The food was very tasty and the experience was only let down by the owner's rudeness to my wife as we were leaving. The owner's mother, who was also working that evening, apologised. We didn't review based on a pop-up experience and decided to wait until Belfast.
First time in Belfast was at the beginning on April. Service was poor, with the staff forgetting the simplest of requests despite the place being almost empty. There was a special on (two smalls, two bigs and two drinks for £50 if I remember correctly), which we ordered. But the second drink didn't appear for a long time and when the bill arrived, we were charged the full price (i.e. not the special price) PLUS an automatic service charge. An extra £15 or so. It was fixed on request, however it felt deceitful instead of accidental.
Second and last time was this weekend. We were rushed through the whole process. Food appeared maybe 5 minutes after ordering but again only one drink appeared. When brought to their attention, a random drink was brought instead of the one ordered. Then we were asked twice if they could take our plates, despite still making our way through the meal. Then when it came time to pay, the second drink had also been added to the bill in addition to the first one never received, along with a service charge. Both removed on request.
I can't help but feel like the small additional charges are slipped in here and there in the hope customers don't notice. Two very similar things on two different occasions. My wife didn't notice either of them, so there will definitely be other customers overlooking too.
Sadly, we won't be back. There's so much potential but the place is a train wreck in its...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at a vibrant spot on Belfast’s Fountain Street, which left our taste buds buzzing with excitement. The place is a treasure trove for those who cherish a big focus on flavors, especially with an Asian-inspired twist. The atmosphere is unrivalled, teeming with energy, and complements the dining experience with its carefully curated selection of love-fuelled cocktails, wines, beers, and other drinks. It’s an ambiance that sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.
We kicked off our culinary journey with the Jiaozi - an appetizer that instantly set the bar high. These were not your ordinary dumplings; each bite was a burst of unique flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. They were an excellent introduction to the restaurant’s innovative approach to traditional dishes.
Moving on to the mains, we dared to dive into the fiery depths of their Malacca Laksa and Jumon Dandan noodles. Both dishes were a testament to the chef’s prowess in creating a harmonious blend of spices that ignite the palate. The Asian fusion twist added an unexpected but delightful complexity to the flavors. However, a word of caution to those who might not fancy the heat as much – these dishes pack a spicy punch that can challenge even the bravest spice lovers.
In all, our dining experience was nothing short of spectacular. The restaurant on Fountain Street is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore Asian-inspired dishes with a bold flavor profile, all set within an electric atmosphere. Whether you’re in for the drinks or the delectable dishes, you’re in for a treat that’s sure to tantalize your senses. Just remember to gauge your spice tolerance before diving into the more fiery options...
