Having ordered food for home delivery on several occasions from BMU, last night we decided to eat in their new restaurant. We have 2.5 yo twins so dining out isn't always easy for us, but Josh couldn't get us colouring sheets and pencils fast enough, our kids didn't have the time to start messing around š The restaurant is immaculate (no sticky tables here) and the team are warm and welcoming. My partner is a coeliac and has a peanut allergy, which again, can make it difficult for us to dine out, but time and time again we have found the guys at BMU so knowledgeable about allergies and cross-contamination that my partner always feels confident his food isn't going to make him poorly and I don't think it's a coincidence he has never had a reaction whenever he's eaten BMU food. Again, last night Josh was so confident and knowledgeable it made my partner relax and not stress his food may be accidentally contaminated. The quality and presentation of the food speak for themselves, the burgers look so good it's nearly a crime to eat them, but then the first bite will have you fall in love and want for more, so perhaps destroying a work of art is acceptable in this case. I had a baconator and fries and I genuinely struggled to eat it all up, I did so out of sheer gluttony, but the portions here are abundant, so come hungry! My kids could also not finish their meals, which were promptly and kindly boxed up for us to take home š«¶š» The burgers are juicy and an explosion of taste, chicken tenders crunchy and well-seasoned and the fries are exactly what you'd want them to be: crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. My partner nearly shed a tear of joy when he tasted his gluten free stout from local Stirchley brewery Birmingham Brew Company and I have to say the shakes are somehow better in-house than when we had them delivered. All in all a 10/10 experience. I'm sure these guys are fed up with me leaving good reviews, but I am amazed at their passion, warmth and professionalism. They love what they do and it truly shows.
P.S. whoever picked the glassware needs a medal, a true delight...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHad been meaning to go to BMU for ages and glad I finally did. Really conveniently located, about 2 mins walk from Bournville railway station on Stirchley high street. You can tell that a lot of thought has gone into the location, its fresh and inviting, everything is spotlessly clean and theyāve even got a separate entrance for collection so the door doesnāt have to keep opening every 2 minutes (pet peeve of my friend when itās cold!) for delivery drivers.
Onto the food: the tendies were crispy and delicious and loved the loaded smiley faces which had a proper, thick cheesy sauce on them. Star of the show was the burgers. My friend and I split two between us and they were GOOD. No weak burgers here, these are burgers with strength. The Daredevil Beef had a nice kick to it and was well-balanced with beef, cheese, chorizo and jalapeƱos working well together, and a lovely hot sauce. Second was the PBJ and wow this was good! The peanut butter was just the right amount, had a great crunch and it never got claggy or overpowering, even up to the last bite. But what about the jam? Absolutely delicious, again just the right amount to pair perfectly with the peanut butter, beef, cheese and bacon/onion relish. You wouldnāt think a burger with peanut butter and raspberry jam on it would be so good but it really, really is. We practically inhaled everything, it was so good. Fantastic burgers, great sides, lovely establishment overall and really nice staff - we chatted with Charlie who served us and he was really friendly and helpful. Will definitely be...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI really wanted to like one of Stirchley's newest, independent eateries, but I'm afraid I left rather disappointed. The pictures on the website and social media are definitely not what you get!
The staff were really friendly and helpful, however, the patties were too thin, overcooked (as was the bacon), and the burger needed a decent portion of crisp salad. The whole thing was way too dry and way too salty. Plus, with a burger called 'Gherkin Lurgin', I'd expect more than three slices of gherkin.
I see that the response to other reviews is that the burgers are smashed and supposed to be crispy - so might not be to everyone's taste. My advice is to ask the customer what they want, and avoid disappointment.
At £11.45 just for a burger and then nearly £4 for the chips, better quality of ingredients and more generous portions are absolutely expected... And table service (rather than having to use an app or paying at the bar). Drinks are reasonably priced.
As they're relatively new, I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as with a few adjustments; improved burgers, balanced flavours, and more generous fillings, they could do very well. However, Stirchley has some excellent eateries, so improvements are needed, and soon, if they are to be come a permanent fixture.
I totally acknowledge that running a food business is incredibly tough. Costs are high, and the competition is fierce, so I will give them another try ā and I'd encourage others to support local too... But they definitely need to...
