Was excited to try a Civerinos sit-down location after hearing about their high ranking with Time Out magazine. We were wanting a Detroit-style slice, but 2/3 were out of supply. Understandable as it was 6:30 on Friday.
Unfortunately the pizzas we got were only lukewarm, we were too hungry to flag someone down to reheat them and wait again. The Parmesan is an interesting touch, but I found the slices to be extremely floppy like the ones at the Portobello stand. It just doesn’t have the oomph and tanginess, and in-your-face garlicky-ness of a good NY pizza. I did enjoy that they provide chili flakes for some heat. Finally, the tin can stands are a bit precarious at a 2-person table and I was careful to keep it balanced.
The interior feels a little brightly-lit and cold for it to be like a true grungy family pizza place in NY. Obviously we are in the UK but dimming the lights and adding neon elements in the dining room with vibey 70s music goes a long way.
Overall I just wish the pizza was much hotter as I’ve read it in other reviews, other issues are minor compared. And upping production for Detroit style slices to have availability at dinnertime would be valuable as Homies Pizza folded recently. I think the idea is great but it doesn’t measure up to some of the rave...
Read moreVisiting from London and this looked like a good spot when passing, so decided to check it out for lunch. Early reviews didn’t look promising - though it did look like that might have been teething problems in their first few weeks.
The queue outside was a good sign though. And so it proved to be! What a joint!
Went for the ultra thin cheese pizza - huge and square. Thin base, very crispy on the corners and a little floppier in the middle - so something for everyone. The cheese is pecorino, so a good, strong, sharp cheese flavour. Nice punchy marinara base. Really special pizza - the standout for me. Genuinely better than anything I’ve had anywhere for a long time. This is Grade A pizza.
Also has a spicy sausage New York-style. Again, excellent. Less crispy, but that’s what you get with extra toppings…
Then also very good was a slice of the Detroit-style pepperoni. This is a deep base slice loaded with tomato, pepperoni and slathered in chilli honey. Looks small, but one slice is enough for a meal for most people.
Really wish we had some proper New York pizza places like this down in London - Edinburgh is lucky to have it! I’ll be back soon just for another pie!!

Read moreSoooooooo slooooooow. We came here early doors on a Saturday night. Two youngish kids in tow, eating in. The pizza took 1 hour and 5 minutes to arrive. Completely unacceptable for any restaurant, especially a pizza place.
In fact I could have made my own dough, grown my own tomatoes and probably even milked a cow and made my own cheese during the time it takes these guys to produce a simple pizza.
What was worse was that at no stage until I asked, about 40 mins into the wait, was the delay even acknowledged. Then I got some quite defensive behaviour from one staff member. What needed to happen was that we should have been told as soon as the delay was apparent that there would be a long wait.
On the positive side, the pizzas were OK (if a little cold and not a patch on Forrest Road), they were (once I complained) then telling new guests how long the wait would be, and the manager did comp our pizzas (although we still got charged for drinks and salad).
Still, you guys need to sort out your kitchen and get better at communicating when people come in your restaurant.
Won’t be rushing back here again. If you go, ask them when you go in how long the...
