Let's say it was a bad day, and I would like to quickly forget this experience. I am an admirer and a customer of everything else that the owner of this place is doing and has done in Edinburgh. So I came here only with positive expectations. Unfortunately they now lie crushed under the ruins of reality.
Only one dish was OK, a tomato based seafood soup with cod and mussels, and even that was salty. Fried courgettes were soggy and dripping. The accompanying aioli was the last thing one needed for that greasy mess. Gnudi (ricotta parcels) were meh, with an advertised mascarpone that was missing in action unless it was that solid greenish and flavourless lump in the middle of the dish. The gnudi were, unusually, fried. Since evidently there isn't a master of the art of frying in the kitchen, this did not help.
All this one might say is subjective. Some people might like greasy courgettes. The dish I found inexcusable from any angle was a starter of "tenderstem" broccoli, the best part of which was hard and the worst part of which was just inedible. Only in extreme circumstances do I leave something on the plate, because a long time ago mum taught me not to do so and it stuck. This was one of those circumstances.
To end on a good note, the front of house staff, which I'll probably never see again, was friendly, smart and...
Read moreI dined at this restaurant yesterday, eagerly anticipating the experience after following its opening on Instagram. Unfortunately, I left feeling quite disappointed. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a great atmosphere, but it became clear that the staff were struggling under pressure—perhaps due to being short-staffed.
We waited a while to be asked about drinks, which were good once they arrived. However, there was another lengthy delay before anyone came to take our order, and we had to ask a staff member to place it for us.
The starters were the highlight—delicious, well-portioned, and flavorful. Unfortunately, the mains were a letdown. We ordered the pappardelle ragu and the gnocchi. The pappardelle was fine but lacked depth of flavor, tasting more like pasta water than a ragu. The gnocchi, at £15, was downright disappointing. We received only six pieces, which was absurd considering our starter had a bigger portion. It felt more like a small plate than a main, especially after waiting 45 minutes and feeling hungry.
Despite sharing the pappardelle, we left still hungry. The bill came to £80 for two starters and two mains, which left us feeling underwhelmed and unsatisfied. While the atmosphere and starters were promising, the mains and service need significant improvement for...
Read moreInterior is lovely, although quite small and cramped, main walkway being narrow means people and staff constantly bumping into you, no space to move. The service was great, attentive and happy to answer any questions, they could probably have done with a couple more floor staff though. I’ve waited a while to dine here, being an Edinburgh resident we’ve all seen many people talk about this spot being 10/10 and a must visit however I felt it was underwhelming and a bit disappointing. The portions are pretty small, we got a mix of starters, mains and sides, some of them quite pricey for what they are. The raved about ragu arrived cold, pasta on the just-done side of al dente, we were hungry so didn’t mention the temperature. The Pea & Leek risotto was pretty horrible, just one gloopy homogenous cheesy paste, we thought it would have had plump peas throughout and tender leeks but guessing maybe they used them blended as the cooking stock? No vegetable flavour at all just very strong salty cheese. We had other dishes which were all very average. Finished with the Tiramisu, tasty but no real tiramisu flavour punch, tiny tiny portion for £6.50. All in all I more than likely wouldn’t return, I’m glad i’ve visited but left feeling underwhelmed and wouldn’t recommend it to...
