Really disappointed. I have a lot of allergies including soya intolerance, nut allergy and I'm celiac, so we booked a table here for a friends birthday after reading good reviews online about plenty of Gluten free options. However what the website fails to mention is that they apparently to now fry everything in soya oil, including the gf bases(?) . So there was nothing I could eat. I asked the waitress (who, to her credit, was fantastic and the only reason I gave service three stars) if the chef could please make me a baked potato, she checked and apparently he refused. If you're serving chips then there should be potatoes on the premises surely (unless they are frozen...) So I paid for half a bag of floppy lettuce and some tinned anchovies because I was starving. To not be able to offer a suitable alternative meal in this day and age, or even tweak the menu slightly for a paying customer, and to feel like such an inconvenience is really not what I need when I rarely eat out anyway. I know my allergies and fairly uncommon but surely you can now see the importance of proper disclaimers online before you arrive and sit down. Had I not asked what the GF base was made from I would have been poorly too as there's no mention of soya whatsoever, even on the allergy matrix in the restaurant. Food also took about an hour to arrive. We would have gone elsewhere but we had booked a table in advance and wouldn't have got in anywhere else at that time of night. Really...
Read moreA business only kept afloat by its location. AVOID. I've lived in Edinburgh all my life and I have fond memories of wisiting mamma's pizza restaurant a good 20 yesrs ago with my girlfriend at the time. The pizzas used to be absolutely unique tasting and truly out of this world. I visited mamma's again a few months ago with my wife and son and was very disappointed. I put it down to just an off day but our experience a few days ago, left me in no doubt that mamma's as it used to be.. exists no more. As I write, it's the middle of the Edinburgh festival and mamma's was VERY busy. After our dreadful meal it is quite apparant that the many customers is purely a function of the terrific location mamma's enjoys, rather than the quality of the food. My pizza was TOTALLY tastless with a base which was as tough as old boots. My wife's chicken wings were equally bland and tastless and all 3 glasses of soft drinks were filthy. It's such a shame as this USED to be a great restaurant but now it's just an eatery where you will be served bland, unappetising fare sitting alongside customers who are unlikely to have been there for a second time. Even a Pizza Hut would be better than this. A business only kept afloat by its...
Read moreI've been fond of Mamma's for many years and even throgh they've passed their peak they remain a favourite.
Once dotted around from Inverleith to Bruntsfield, now the Grassmarket branch is all that remains. However, they've long provided one of the better gluten free pizzas I've come across - crispy, flavoursome, and almost indistinguishable from the 'normal' ones.
The range of toppings is huge and you'll probably find yourself debating whether pickled cactus and marshmallows would go together. Which is a refreshing alternative to most pizzerias' mainstream selection of meat and veg. I'm also a fan of anywhere that gives me the option of coating my food in parmesan and chilli.
Since the Grassmarket was reopened as something that looks rather continental, it's lovely to sit outside here on a summer day and eat nice pizza while watching the tourists. Inside is a little bit cramped, but then there's always the option of takeaway as well. The staff are mostly quite wonderfully eccentric, and likely to get caught up in silly banter, which I always see as an excuse in itself to...
