We stayed close by at an Airbnb. Ate here atleast 4 times while we were in town. There were 8 of us so we got to taste each others food if we dined together. Sometimes lunch, sometimes dinner; same menu.
Appetizers we tried: Cauliflower Wings. Amazing. Same batter as fish and chips. Had a slight kick to it though. Haggis bon bons were also really good. Heavier outer fried crust but the filling was light and flavorful.
Entrees we tried: Chicken wings and the spice bag are in a curry sauce. My wife doesn’t like curry but she had the wings 3 times this week. They’re that good. Breaded style but the meat falls off the bone. Hot salmon salad was excellent…very light. Seafood linguini…probably my favorite. Again, light and lemony no heavy flavors. Bangers and mash…I could drink the gravy. Sausages have the texture of a bratwurst. Thyme was a little strong, but not overwhelming. Mashed potatoes were perfect. I didn’t have the fish and chips but several family members did and they said it was really good. Also the pasta dish was good. Only neutral was the burger…not bad but nothing special.
As for service… we had several different waitresses while we were here and they were all excellent. There were 2 that stood out, I don’t remember their names but they really took good care of us.
And the atmosphere. More than just a pub…with seriously excellent food! Oh I almost forgot the Sticky Toffee Pudding! A large portion of spiced/date cake DRENCHED in butter toffee sauce with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Probably top 3 desserts I’ve had in my entire life. No lie. Its a big portion and its very sweet but SO good.
So bottom line, O’Connors was a high point of our stay in Edinburgh. If we ever come back to town we will...
Read moreWell what can I say, the staff are simply rude and degrading. As a regular of The Other Place, I visited O'Connors yesterday for the first time since the changeover.
While we were greeted rather quickly at the bar when we arrived by an Irish man, we asked how much a bottle of Prosecco was since The Other Place used to do a good Prosecco deal. We were told that Prosecco is now only sold by the bottle and was £23 compared to the £14 bottle you used to be able to get.
With this in mind we decided to have something else and while we observed the new interior and some unfamiliar staff members, a disgruntled girl behind the bar named Jade butted into our conversation and said "yes, there are new staff here" which was a little uncalled for.
While the Irish man was at the till we both heard and saw Jade slyly say to him "was that Prosecco too expensive for them?" and they both laughed. At this point we approached Jade and confronted her as we were both of course very unhappy and were made to feel like we didn't belong in a bar which we once used to visit on a weekly basis.
She obviously denied it and apologised for causing any offence however you could see the guilt written all over her face. Our nice Sunday afternoon soon turned bitter after that moment and we swiftly left after finishing our drinks.
Will definitely not be returning and will also tell others not to bother unless they wanted to be served by...
Read moreI would recommend the seafood linguine and the chicken wings with buffalo sauce, both of which were great.
The seafood linguine was great. The sauce was spicy and sour, and packed enough of a punch. The monkfish was slightly chewy, slightly dry and had the texture of crab. The prawns were crunchy. Delicious.
The chicken wings were not bad too. While the spicy buffalo sauce wasn't very spicy, it was good. It was oily, tangy and slightly spicy. The wings were moderately crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It would've been my preference for the wings to have been properly marinated in a sauce beforehand, but this is just my personal preference and I could always dip the wings in the sauce in between bites.
The beyond meat burger was worse, although it was still ok. It was missing a little something, possibly ketchup to add a slight kick to the flavour.
The service was generally ok, and you get food and drinks and pay the bill at the counter. It was a little noisy on a weekend evening, as you would...
